Knee Replacement Female age 41?

Is looking for some advice, all started a couple of years ago with knee pain in right knee. I used to run a fair bit no marathons the odd 10k, saw gp and got referred to specialist. Had first arthroscopy surgery where they found a hole in the cartilage. Then had second operation of an implant fitted. Since then fell over into knee and badly bruised it consultant thought it was meniscus tear. Did 3rd arthroscopy and showed a lot of wear and tear and arthritus. Still in pain, effects my sleep and daily routine. Last week had a cortisone injection, not felt any benefit yet, initially seemed easier but then same pain back. Consultant has advised knee replacement would be the next step but I am young. He said my knee is in a pretty bad way. Not sure on the time scale and what to do regarding this. Any help would be appreciated. ;-)

Hi Tracey 05168 I'm 12 weeks post op and if I'm honest with you not sure I've done the right thing or not. I've cancelled my right leg couldn't face another op. Everything has gone well surgery and PT but I feel my life's on hold and if I had been told it would be like this not sure if I'd agree to surgery but it's done now so all I can hope is 6 months time I'll feel the be benefit pain-free. Everyone handles it different so you're 30yrs younger than me maybe you'll recover quickly. If you're in so much pain it might benefit you but only you can decide think carefully, weigh the options up maybe less running more swimming might alleviate the pain for a few years. So good luck whatever you decide to do

Thanks for the rely and your feedback, sorry to hear about the pain you have had following your op. I definitely don’t run anymore, after my implant I had a brace for 6 weeks and couldn’t bend my leg, eventually when removed I had to try to bend which was agony. I have now got bend back and only cycle in the gym and do leg press as my quad muscles were very weak. I am determined to get the muscle back, it does feel stronger than months ago, but does sometimes give way. I hope you feel relief soon, time is a great healer as they say!

Hi Tracy I am improving daily do a 1km per day on my static bike when 2 weeks ago it was impossible now a doddle just goes to show how exercises regularly can help. I'm hoping they'll also help my right knee so maybe no need for an op, (,here's hoping,). I think for me the first 4 weeks were horrific not so much pain as uncomfortable and restrictive. I've taken very little painkillers since coming out of hospital since I have Crohns disease and anti inflammatory dont help. I haven't taken anything regularly at all since 6 weeks. Occasional paracetamol at night tried a sleeping tablet, didn't work, so have put up with it. Been out today for a 2km walk slowly and quite comfortable no arthritic pain at all (except in my other knee) so looking good and feeling positive. Whatever you decide good luck. I'll keep the forum updated as to my recovery
