Knees throbbing at night after THR

Posted , 5 users are following.

I'm two weeks post surgery and things seem to be moving along nicely except at night I can't sleep for more than an hour and a half at a time and my knees throb constantly. I've put pillows under my knees but it doesn't seem to alleviate it at all. Any advice?

    Hi Kazareth,

I had a bit of this around week 2 for 2 nights only on my operated leg. When I scaled back just a bit, elevatedo and iced a bit more I was fine.

    Good luck!

    Hi

I had the very same problem for around 3 and a bit weeks, now I'm nearly 4 weeks post op,for the last 4 nights I have only got up to visit the bathroom, so sleeping better waking up every 2 hours but going back to sleep. I really sympathise with you as the first 3 weeks I was having to get up and go downstairs for long periods due to pain, restless leg and swelling. So honestly it will start to improve, there is an end to it,the pillow is a good idea.i took one 30 mg codeine just before bed to help with pain, seemed to help a bit,I also noticed at night if I get up everything 40 minutes it reduces the swelling a little, I'm not sure if this will help with your knees. I also rub some arnica oil into the knee, which helps bruising and throbbing, although you may want to check with your own gp if this is okay, it's helped me.i do hope this resolves for you soon, it's just awful, stay positive it will get better.

Thank you Nicky everyday is a little better but everyone tells you sleeping will aide your recovery which is difficult when you can't sleep!

I will hopefully only have a week or so to deal with the throbbing knees issue now then!

I hope you are recovering nicely - it's much harder than I expected particularly as everyone kept saying "ooh you're very young to be having a hip replacement, you'll be up and running in a couple of weeks!!!"

      Hi,

Your welcome,I was only getting 2 hours a night, which makes you feel dreadful, so I do empathise. I also had the same "your so young" I'm 49,I think in the long run when we are pain free, it will have been the right descion. Thanks I'm getting there but it has been really hard, everyone's recovery is different, just take it slowly slowly, all the best, hopefully you will get a decent sleep soon.

I second arnica massage cream, it helped with my swollen throbbing knees. 🏃

I'm having a similar issue. I'm one month post surgery and I'm very concerned about this and other pain that I have. I didn't imagine that I would still have so much pain this much post surgery and I don't have a clue what is going on. Please keep me updated with your progress.
