3 months post op tried to go on exercise bike and discovered my knee turns inward. Also noticed from day one that my toe also points inwards. When walking lately I noticed my knees bump together.

Feel I need to see physio but have had my 2 sessions before this problem became noticeable.Has anyone else had this problem? Not sure what to do

    hi janet,

good for you that you noticed it --- your physical therapist should have seen it and given your exercises accordingly -

Pigeon toe is a no-no, according to my surgeon ... after 2nd THR my foot turned a bit inward and I was told to make sure that I point my foot a little outward ...

    Are you wearing pre-op shoes?

Talk to your PT - I am sure it can be corrected --

please let us know how you are getting on, okay

    big warm hug

You do need to see physio, probably beacuse of weak muscles in your buttocks, I had something similar, turned out to be the smallest muscle in my buttocks, it was really weak, had to work hard to get it to co-operate but once I got it about a month later the exercises really helped.

She also took me through a general level of fitness before and after and was amazed I was so strong in some muscles and so weak in others, but overall very impressed, I gained alot of general strength from treading water in the local heated pool, for about 4 hours a week.

Yes had my first physio last week and the first thing he said was your knee is turning inwards ... To compensate for putting full weight into joint as it hurt . Very common post THR .. You need to see physio as you are not standing correctly . He gave me exercises to do and to make my knee straight face on when standing not turn it in which you naturally do if it hurts . At your stage recovery seems your body has learnt to do this as mine was three weeks in .

      Hi Hazel

What exercises where you given?I have only just started doing my side raises when lying and cycling when on side as they felt too strenuous before.Wonder if these might help?

Well I had to get off the chair with knee slightly to the right ( bad leg- reverse if opposite I.e slightly to the left ) and foot straight and push up from the bad leg with no support. So that your knee turns slightly out not in ... Plus same climbing few stairs leg straight from heel of bad leg .

Don't know what happens to knees after THR.  About 5 weeks post op my left knee started to kill me in pain.  After several tests and then finally an MRI shows that my knee is shot.  Need knee replacement.  I cannot go thru another surgery again.  Funny, my knee never bothered me before.  Now I am in double pain and on strong pain meds due to the kee pain same knee as THR.  I have done alot of research on knee pain after hip replacement and it is very common, sad indeed.  I don't have the same problem as you but funny the knee seems to go wacky after THR in alot of cases.  The best of luck to you.. june  Take care of yourself...

Blinking heck ! What bad luck ! I had my bad leg knee X Ray before my hip op as I had knee pain but it was ok it was referred pain from the hip . Hip was gone not knee . But then again 5 years ago my hip X Ray was ok too ! Hope the knees don't go after the hips ! Sorry to hear that ... Knee surgery is reportedly worse than hip surgery ! Ye gods !

I too have noticed that my foot is a bit pigeon toed. It wasn't like that before. I see physio on Friday so will make sure that mention it. In the meantime what would be the best exercises to do? At the moment I'm doing side raises lying and standing, leg lifts from knee standing and lying and pulling heel into bottom while lying as well as building up my walking

Hi. I had both my hip totally replaced a few years back. 2012 was my left hip and 2013 was my right hip. I had to have surgery on my right hip twice due to the incision getting infected. All was great with the hip surgeries. No pain or any complications, other than the infection. I was up walking without a walker 2 weeks after both surgeries. The Dr did not ordered any physical therapy. He sent me home with exercises to do there. Like I've said I have had no pain or complications until last December, and that wasn't even with the hip joints. I started having excruciating pain in my left femur bone. From 3 inches from my hip joint to 2 inches from my knee, it would constantly hurt until I took the weight off of it go like 15 seconds and it was fine. I'm a cook so I'm on my feet constantly at work. I have always wore comfortable shoes. I would have pain with them. I recently bought a cheap pair of shoes and my pain has subsided tremendously. I am also 5/16 taller on my right side so I do have to wear a wedge in my left shoe to try to keep my hips leveled. Ok so here the issue I'm having now. I've noticed like 2 weeks ago that my left leg is turning inward when I walk. Like pigeon toed. My knees are not knocking. I am not in any pain so I'm baffled to what's going on. I go see my primary dr on the 4th and I'm going to let her know what's going on and see what she suggests. Have any of you guys had this issue before or are having it now? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

5 mins ago I felt like I was the only one who had BL hip replacements and then noticed their legs were severely knock kneed and pigeon toed. Thank you for all your shares!

I used a walker for the past 10 years. Got the R hip done 5 yrs ago and the L one about 6 weeks ago. I was afraid to bring it up to my surgeon at postop because I was afraid he would think I was trying to tell him he put my hips in crooked or was ungrateful for all he’d done. So this was a great relief.

He DID put in for PT which is scheduled to start this Friday.

Sounds like I better save some pain meds for those exercises you guys are describing. Lol!

Thanks again everyone! Take good care of yourselves.

    Hi all my hipster friends,

Just had my left HR done 3 weeks ago, and and really doing very well for such a short time out of surgery.  Had my right HR done in 2016 so it's been 2 years in between.  The surgery itself went much better with this one than the 1st one for whatever reason,  One thing was, they used a more compatible anesthetic (general) so that I wasn't sick upon awakening and generally felt better.  I am recuperating much faster with this one than the 1st and it is a mystery as to why other than maybe my right one was stronger and had much more integrity this time around as it had already been done, so?????  One thing I am bothered with (and I remember this with the 1st replacement but it didn't last as long) is that my ankle is slightly sore when I walk.    It's kind of a 'weak sore' to try and describe it correctly.  When I first got home and put weight on that leg, the back of my knee was sore all the way down to the back of my ankle but the knee part went away after some modified exercises and just using it more. But now my ankle is still sore.  Can't figure out whether it's just that I'm using it now and I hadn't been for at least a year so?  I am kind of thinking that your entire alignment has changed somewhat with replacement and those muscles have to come around but again??????  I am in physical therapy and the therapist is kind of puzzled as well, so????  Anyone else have this strange 'weak pain' in the back of the leg?  Thanks in advance for any input!
