Kyphoscoliosis

Im a 59 year old male and have Kyphoscoliosis and no surgery. Is there any one else out there with the same and how do you cope with the pain because im in chronic pain sad

    I'm 68 now and was dignosed bout 10 years ago with idopathic {unknown cause} kypho scoliosis........I was told the surgery had very good results on teenagers and into the 20's but after that....it was a no no......I dont know about you but I dont fancy having spinal surgery at this age.  I've always had a bad back but it was never diagnosed as scoliosis until 10 years ago  it was the sort of thing that cam and went......now its there all the time and the C shaped curve and slight hump at the top. I also have O.A. had 2 hip replacements, just been diagnosed with ostoporosiseek

    As for the pain......well exercises help, pain killers/dullers LOL help a bit, distraction and relaxation also help.....what about heat when you are at home...microwaveable wheat bag?? Keep moving as much as possible....but pace yourself....dont do too much at once. It sounds as if I havent any pain ...I do but these are some of the methods that help me......Oh yes sometimes a ge/cream will help......havent found anything that takes it away completely.

    Hi Peter,

    I'm 64 and was first diagnosed with kyphoscoliosis at 15.  I have a double curve, ie S shaped and until recently managed the pain with plenty of exercise, mainly yoga, swimming and walking and regular back massages.  Things took an unexpected turn for the worse last year with a sudden loss of height, worsening curves and serious pain. I do sympathise with you. Seems I have osteoporsis as well nowsad Suspected crush fracture of the spine.

    I have bought a Tens machine, but this can only be used at home and have taken up Tai Chi (through Age Uk) to help build upper body strength.  I also use Dyna Bands, again to help build upper body strength.  These are easily bought on the internet and are not expensive.  If you're not used to exercise I suggest you get the pink beginners bands.

    You could try asking your Consultant or GP for a referral to a physiotherapist who could give you exercises spedifically for your problem. 

    I agree with Eileen, pace yourself.  I have a lot of 5/10 minute rests between jobs these days.

    Would you qualify for an op?  Would you consider it? Have you asked about it?  In spite of my age I was offered one about six months ago.  I turned it down then but am giving it serious consideration now.

    Hi Peter. 

    I know your pain.

    I find it's not so bad in the summer though because my back stays warm. The osteopath always told me to keep my back warm. It's a great help. 

    I don't suffer so much in summer. 

    Have you had mindful therapy that's good breathing techniques. Regular exercising Pilates, and also pacing yourself. 

    Works better all this if you remember to do it everyday, keep a diary that's useful too. 

    Don't over do it! That's the key. T.c 😊
