L5 s1 Discectomy. Help

Hi guys

I'm a 26 year old male I've had severe back back since the age of 18 (on and off) the doctors used to just hand over medicated like sweets to me with no other support not even physio (paid solely by myself).

After a unbearable bout of pain I demanded some much needed help from a GP they finally referred me to a specialist who then referred me too a surgeon. After a MRI scan I had a 'ruptured disc' L5 S1. surgery was needed. Which I went through last Monday (12th Jan)

It's been 10 days since my op, I had a bit of pain the first couple of days from then on I was fine. But today I have woken up with a sharp pain on in my lower left side just above my buttocks.

Has anyone experienced this pain after there op?

Also what have people been doing after there op? I have been doing minimal. Short walks and moving around the house, the excises the physio gave me, mostly lm lay on my bed all day. I'm just worried if I should be doing move or less..

Also would be great too hear of some other peoples story's on there experiences.

Comments would be much appreciated

Cheers smile

Craig

    Yes I had that pain after an L3-4 fusion . When the doctor goes in they move muscles and nerves get interrupted . I had pain in my but also , I also had a feeling of fire on my leg, a feeling of water running down my let . I had all kinds of weird feelings, but now 10 weeks later they are gone . I still have some numbness in my toes . It is a good idea to walk all you can < don't over do it though . this strengthens your core and other muscles around your spine but it also keeps the scar tissue from sticking . it basically keeps everything from sticking . other than that you sound like your doing very well . just don't bend over or pick up anything very heavy for a couple months and if you do need to pick something up. squat down and keep your back straight . don't="" over="" do="" it="" though="" .="" this="" strengthens="" your="" core="" and="" other="" muscles="" around="" your="" spine="" but="" it="" also="" keeps="" the="" scar="" tissue="" from="" sticking="" .="" it="" basically="" keeps="" everything="" from="" sticking="" .="" other="" than="" that="" you="" sound="" like="" your="" doing="" very="" well="" .="" just="" don't="" bend="" over="" or="" pick="" up="" anything="" very="" heavy="" for="" a="" couple="" months="" and="" if="" you="" do="" need="" to="" pick="" something="" up.="" squat="" down="" and="" keep="" your="" back="" straight="">

A year past June I had a Laminectomy, (taking out broken bits L4and 5 and putting in a spacer), I have been in pain ever since just where you say. No idea what to do, surgeon given up on me! After you have healed properly you should look at exercising, but get a physio say so FIRST. The only thing that helps me is to give in and take all the damn drugs, loose weight,(hard), and exercise gradualy more and more. It hurts at the time but after you get the pay off. Good luck you are terribly young for this.

I am glad I read your post rhonda. I had a laminectomy and it has been 10 weeks . The surgeon says I will be healed in 12 weeks and can have a full release to go back to work . I am a truck driver and do heavy lifting and push  and pull heavy things . My back hurt almost as much now as it did after the surgery and I am wondering if the doctor is out of his mind or something . There is no way I could go back and do my job the way I am feeling now .How long ago was your surgery ?

Oh sorry you are not going to like this! I had my op 18 months ago, the pain never left me but did improve up to 3 months which is when I was told to go back to work, (dance exercise teacher), it was hellishly sore but the exercise helped. Not sure about lifting heavy stuff sounds impossible to me. See a physio if you can afford it, ring up one off the net and get a reliable prognosis re lifting. It all sounds awful, I am thinking about you. R

My back was feeling better but now it seems to have slowed down . This is a work injury so the company is going to be picking up the tab  . But I am in no hurry to blow my back out again .
