L5/S1 herniation should I have the surgery?

I have a microdiscectomy scheduled for this Friday. For about 2 months I have had terrible back pain that spread down my left leg and i ended up in hospital with it 3 weeks ago. After an MRI they said i had a "pretty bad" disc herniation and a consultant said he would operate within 3 months.

The surgery came through much quicker and in the last few days im no longer in agony. i still have a radiating pain down my leg and i definitely cant do everything but a few days ago i was sobbing all morning trying to get up.

everyone is telling me to have the surgery incase it flares up again. i dont know what to do!

Hi there, can I ask whether you went for the surgery or not? i am the same in that after 10 weeks of excruciating pain I am now seeing improvements and 'just' have constant moderate pain in the leg- not as much in the foot anymore. so basically back to the pain i was struggling with before the large herniation. Mine S1/L5 disc herniation and surgery is going to be in about a month's time so I am not sure what to do. I want the best long term outcome as this has been having a huge impact on me and the whole family. be great to hear how you have got on.
