I had surgery 2.5 weeks ago. The MRA did not show anything wrong. The Dr suspected a tendon tear based on what caused pain. Well, while doing the 'scope, he did find a tendon tear and also a labral tear along with cartilage damage, down to the bone. It was a long, 3 hour surgery because of all the problems. I also had micro-fracturing done because of the cartilage damage. Because of the micro-fracture, my recovery is a bit different. I was originally supposed to be 50% weight bearing for 3 weeks, but it turns out I'm non-weight bearing for 3 weeks and then go to 50% for at least 3 more weeks. I do start PT when I go to 50%. That is the first of next week. The pain was horrible the day of surgery but almost disappeared the following day. It was so much better I was only on the tylenol. I never did fill my prescriptions for pain meds. The Dr also ordered a CPM machine to use 8 hours a day. My insurance didn't cover that so I only did it for 1 week. If you have other question, I will try to answer them. My case is NOT normal but it wasn't too bad all in all.

      Thank you,

I am so pleased it has gone well for you, please keep me up to date with your ongoing results as I am sure anyone reading will be keen to learn as much as possible, I have a question for you- can you please find out if your surgeon gave you an anti inflammatory shot just prior to surgery? and if you think its ok who did your surgery? many thanks Brian

I am still recovering. My hip gets sore with walking. I am having more groin pain, more than before the surgery. It is a very slow reovery. I am sorry, I do not think he gave the shot but am not sure. By the time I get to the DR (1.5 hr drive) I have forgotten most of what I want to ask. They did more xrays but nothing shows up (I told the Dr it didn't show up prior to surgery either). My Dr had told me 4 months recovery, now they are saying 6 months. The surgical things are improving but one of my incision sites is still sore, like a bruise.

      Hi,

and thanks for your reply, what a darn nuisance that is for you! if its any comfort I do genuinely feel for you, lets hope its just time that's required to heal the ongoing pain. Since my last email I have torn my labral again simply by just turning around which was incredibly painful! I discussed the surgery option with a surgeon who felt it was important for me to have another mri to confirm the new tear but I asked him given my condition if it was him at my age 63, coupled with the risks of complications and pain from surgery what would he do - his honest reply was "don't have surgery unless you have chronic pain" so I have decided to avoid surgery at this time and try to avoid turning quickly, lets hope I have chosen wisely! and lets hope you get much better very soon keep us posted, kind regards Brian.

Well, I don't know if I would have had the surgery or not knowing what I do now. I am still in pain. Worse than before the surgery. The Dr said I shouldn't have pain now and doesn't know why I do. He said that if I continue and want to, my only option is a hip replacement. I told him I'd wait. But, I am not sure how long I will wait. I am seriously thinking of getting a second opinion. The problem is that none of the tests showed the problems the first time around and there were many of them. They have taken x-rays 3 times since the surgery. They told me it was to see if anything new was wrong but since it didn't show the first time, I'm not sure how good that is. I truly don't know what to do at this time. I am going to wait at least a few more months unless it gets a lot worse. From what I've learned from my experience, I'd wait until it interferes with your daily life.

      Hi ,

I have read all your comments and wonder if 1-the mri was of sufficient power eg when I had focal laser ablation for my swollen prostate my Dr highly recommended a 3 tesla strength mri anything less simply would not show enough accurate detail, 2-getting a well trained mri specialist to read the mri correctly eg when I had a 3 tesla mri on my hip labral tears the person identifying the mri results failed to find the tears but my surgeon found them easily! so I suggest you find out what strength mri you had and if sufficient then get a second opinion on the mri scan additionally if you go to another surgeon for their opinion make sure its one that has much experience not just qualifications, but if you do nothing and just wait I hope it improves for you, kind regards Brian.

Sorry this is so late coming. Summer has had me very busy. 😃. I was improving very slowly but now it seems like I'm getting worse. I have pain all along the top of my thigh/groin that is there to some degree all day but nights are the worst. Not sure what I am going to do.

I have never recovered. Since my surgery, I now have one leg longer than the other and chronic back muscle pain on that side. They say no way it could be caused by the surgery, but I was in the military and I know I never had a leg length discrepancy before. I regret that I did not try to ride our the labral tear pain longer to see if I could have made it through without surgery. I can no longer run. Each day after walking my back kills me.

      Hi Linda,

I truly feel very sad for you both and will try to get by without surgery, lets hope you will find someone that will help keep asking others for advice perhaps physio's that have successful experience in helping others, and lets hope other people will leave suggestions for you.

i am just reading all the comments and i am really confused now.

2 years ago while horse riding, i turned suddenly and I suspected a groin tear. My mistake was to continue horse riding till only earlier this year when pain has become increasingly worse.

I had an x-ray and mri scan done and Dr diagnosed Hip labral tear.

It's hurts when I sit, drive , walk, run ..literally every movement.

I have had 1 cortisone injection and Dr says another will be done in October if pain doesn't improve.

He says surgery will be the last option because surgery is also not a guarantee.

Dr gave me some hip exercises to do but I don't know if this can core it. Also does anyone think weight loss can help ??
