Labyrinthitis ... what happens next ?

Hi fellow sufferers,

I have just been initiated into the wonder world of labrynthitis and looking for some advice please. Mine started totally out of the blue on Thursday morning shortly after I arrived at work. I was in such a state colleagues called an ambulance, who checked me over and diagnosed labrynthitis and suggested one of their specialist paramedics was called in to confirm. I was taken home and he met me there, did another bank of tests and performed an "Epley" which helped slow to horrendous spinning sensation but didn't completely stop it. He gave me an injection and tablet form of prochlorperazine to take 6 hours later. My symptoms continued until amount midnight so around 15 hours from the original onset, then the visual spinning almost stopped. Dizziness has continued since, although varies in severity and I think the tablets which I am taking 1 every morning seem to be settling it. I am hoping to get a GP appointment on Monday to discuss where we go from here. I am concerned about driving but cannot see how I can function without as I live in the "sticks" and work 5 miles away with no public transport options. I am also wary of a recurrence of the awful symptoms I had on Thursday ... never felt so ill and so frightening and out of control. I guess I am lucky that things seem to have improved so quickly to this point that I can somewhat function normally at home, but just concerned about the long term implications. I understand there is no actual treatment for the cause, just control of the symptoms and even that is not totally successful when things flare up. Any advice or info gratefully received. Thanks

Hello, so sorry to hear you are having a rough time. You are doing the right thing by consulting a GP. Try to get him/her to refer you to an ENT who will do various tests and probably refer you to to a vestibular Rehab specialist. Sounds exactly like what I experienced but mine was diagnosed as VN . If its already better, it's a good sign. once you get the exercises, do them religiously. Things will get better but it takes time, flare ups can occur. Good luck!

    hi ,

unfortunately each person has different symptoms but something in common : dizziness and tinnitus in both or only one ear. I'm dealing with this ( vertigo BPBV ) since 3 years . Being and seen ENT specialists, blood test, etc...as you said you can control but I don't think is anything more to do....if you are lucky to find a good specialist you will feel better otherwise .....keep going with eply monovre helps a lot at least 2 weeks every time you go to bed. good luck..!!!

look for a "dizzy clinic" near you. you were diagnosed too quickly. a lot of these disorders overlap each other. you need proper caloric testing to determine if there is damage to you inner ear. sounds like this was a clinical diagnosis. i was diagnosed 3x with different things. first, BPPV- 2nd -vestibular nueritis, finally, vestibular migraines. the 3rd diagnosis was accurate and i am better now. but it was hell when i was being treated for the wrong thing. nuero-otology (otolayngologist) helped me. th ENT- she tried and ruled out certain things. but you should have a catscan and MRI- you should also have blood work, then finally the caloric testing. if this isnt offered, i suggest finding the dr i mentioned and the clinic. they are everywhere. also someone else mentioned vestibular PT- i did this when i was diagnosed with VN-it was comforting and nice to have one person who could understand what i was going thru.
