Lack of sleep

Hi Ladies. Can anyone help with tips on how to deal with disturbed sleep caused by hot flushes/night sweats. I'm having a terrible time with it. Had a TAH 9 wks ago. Kept ovaries but they aren't working yet as I was on 5 months of prostap pre op. Saw my consultant last week who assured ovaries would work in time but at the mo it's awful. Lack of sleep is making my fatigue worse. In most respects my recovery is going well and I'm due back at work in a few weeks. What worries me is that once back at work I can't take naps in the day to catch up on my lack of sleep. Any advice anyone? Sorry if this post appears twice my first attempt crashed - or so I thought.

    Hi Sally.

I had a few sweats etc after my TAH. I was lucky they didn't last long.

Other ladies have posted on here that they have had good relief from hot flushes with a herbal remedy called Kalms.....that might be worth a go?

    Hope you get sorted x

If been getting them since my op back in November , think I'm about 12 weeks now, at first they were disturbing my sleep a lot but I'm getting used to them & now only wake me up some nights ,  I suffer with high blood pressure so not allowed to take herbal stuff,  my gp says they can give you something to help with them but I want to carry on giving blood so should rather not at present , they advice to have a window slightly open at night & use thinner duvet , I hope things improve over the next couple of weeks but if not go speak with your gp .xx

Hi Sally, I'm due to have my op this week, but although apparently not menopausal, last year I started to get mood swings and hot flushes. I went to Holland and Barrett and they recommended Starflower Oil (1000mg) which I started to take and I beleive have made things better for me. I've also had on a couple of occasions when buying them in the shop, complete strangers commenting on how they have been helped with the same tabs. Hope you can get sorted soon xx

    Hi Sally

Now this is nothing to do with hysterectomies, (still waiting for mine!) but when I had the menopause in my 50's, it was terrible, could not sleep, soaked the bed, was temper on legs to my husband, so off to the doctors I went.  I lived in Spain at the time and they do not believe in HRT only natural cures, gosh I thought I am in big trouble here.  Well this lovely Consultant told me if I wanted to stop all these horrible symptoms, to give up coffee, alcohol and sugar.  I know what you are thinking, same here, but .......... it worked (after I got over the withdrawal of coffee, that was hell on earth I will tell you, thought it would be the alcohol I would have a problem with, but no it was the coffee!)  but as I say it worked, all the nasty symptoms stopped and I was calm, sweetness and light and have slept most nights since then.  10 months ago I gave up all grains, and now feel like a 20 year old, energy flowing the lot.  I know this method is probably far too radical for most but just thought I would throw it in the pot.  It also stopped me binge eating (although I always remained slim thank goodness) which I used to do very often, all cravings left me.

Hope you find a solution soon Sally.

Hi there. Very interesting. I did a diet once that cut out caffeine, sugar and alcohol and my hay fever stopped!! Caffeine is a much more powerful drug than people think. I've lapsed and then some over Xmas. Have certainly cut the sugar since Xmas but I'm still having my full strength Nespresso in the morning. Don't drink much but did more over Xmas and that is when my flushes worsened. Gonna start reducing caffeine (sudden cut outs can make you feel like you have flu) and reduce alcohol to the occasional drink. I'll let you know if it improves.

Hi Sally,  it is amazing how food and drink plays quite a hand in how the body reacts.  You are right to reduce the caffeine, I went cold turkey on everything boy did I suffer, still I kicked menopause into touch cannot say fairer than that.  Mind you the body won in the end, they reckon the menopause was the cause of my bladder weakening and my prolapse, as my pelvic muscles are extremely strong, so it was not them.  I suppose you cannot beat nature, but I am trying.

Keep up the good work, and fingers crossed for your op.

    Hi Sally

I had a TAH 9 weeks ago and they took my ovaries as they were attached to my bowel. This brought on a surgical menopause which is really intense and causes really bad night sweats. I don't think anything has prepared me for how bad they can be. I am waking nearly every hour with them so am completely worn out the next day. I went to see my g p yesterday and burst into tears as I'm so tired. I'm 52 and she said I'm too old for HRT  so I'm going to start taking a herbal remedy called Menopace so fingers crossed that will help. I'm due back to work in 2 weeks so fingers crossed I will be able to stay awake as like you no chance for a nap in the middle of work!!! I sleep with the window open every night and am avoiding alcohol . Hopefully we will start to improve soon but it's nice to know that we're not alone!!!

    Regards

Hi Teresa. You are not alone that's for sure. I'm 47 but as I've kept my ovaries I'm expecting them to work. In the end the prostap I was on did nothing to reduce my fibroid it was too big. Just hope I haven't killed off my ovaries for nothing. I know I would start the menopause naturally in a few years but symptoms induced this way are awful and worse since my hysterectomy. I'm due to see my GP next week so will ask her about herbal remedies. Since I've become more active and recovered I am avoiding naps in the afternoon but boy am I suffering in the morning. Keep me posted as to how you get on with your Menopace.

Thank you Sally so much for bringing this up, as this was my next query. Two weeks post op.  My sleep patern shot to blazes, hot flushes and just trouble sleeping in general, been reading through some of your replies so defo will calm down on the coffee, (drink far to much) and see how that progresses, if there's no improvement will try KALMS.  Its reassuring to know that I'm not the only one.  I hope your sleeping improves and your recovery continues to go smoothly.
