Laminectomy/Fusion HELP

I just spend about 40 minutes on the phone with my brother who is 72....he's in FL and I'm in CA.

He's scheduled for the above back surgery in Early Dec.....I gave him all the negatives of doing this back surgery....Right now he says he's not in that much pain.....   Says his doc told him yrs ago he's got the back of an 80 yr old, when I was my 30's my osteopath told me I had the back of a 90 yr. old.

I exercise, take supps, do special stretches for back etc....and gave him as much info as I could and he could handle.

I know people who have had one, then had to do another and still live on pain meds...I remember some a woman somewhere said she had 5 and was done, she's still in pain......

What GOOD are they?

Tell me SOME positives about doing this back surgery, PLEASE....

Your right , A lot of people get hacked up . A good recommendation can only take you so far . Once your on the table the decision is out of your hand . You are throwing the dice and hoping for the best . Like I mentioned, no one thought i made a good decision , but I really didn't see how it could be much worse, but it could have . Every body please use all means to make sure you got someone good and has had a good education . I looked at health grades and vitals to find out what i could . Its unfortunate that sometimes our back is against the wall .

What area of Calif?  I'm in Santa Monica....  I see  you are 52 and I'm 76 and I don't know too many older folks who don't kinda moan and groan with back issues...   maybe much younger people too.

Guess I was fortuante all my life, first OA signs came on at 18 and I got thru a long life with chiro, osteopath adjusting, stretching, gym work and lots of walking and dancing.   And maybe I just have a higher pain threshold too.

I still stretch and lot and ride my recumbent bike a bit to keep knee moving and take lots of supps for joint issues....

All thru my life,  back surgery was never brought up and I told my brother our MRI's could have contests as to which looks worse....he was telling me about his MRI's and I said we could have a contest.

At this point, it's all maintenance and hope FOR ME, no more knives...surgeons love their work.   We have a Prolo MD here on the Westside who was going to be a surgeon via UCLA medical school and after a botched surgery when he was much younger, he changed his path to Prolotherapy work.....I've had some Prolo in my shoulder and it was good for 3 yrs....and now I'm looking at Prolozone for my knee which is oxygen/ozone injections and I have a westside MD who does this less expensive protocol....  Joy
