lamotrogine for bi-polar

Hi. About 8 years ago I started on lamotrogine to control my epileptic seizures. They did the job well and after a couple of years for personal reasons i decided to give up all medication. I have had to amend my lifestyle dramatically for this and to date i have had no more seizures. I have recently been diagnosed with bi-polar and was prescribed lamotrogine again and i am currently taking 200 mg once a day. the doctors have assured me that this medication is in no way to do with y epilepsy and purely for keep my mood swings to a steady level. Does anybody out there have anymore information on using this medication for bi-polar.

    JUst very quickly.

I am Bi Polar and I have found Lamotrigine very useful although at first it made me very sleepy.

With my Dr we have slowy taken teh doseage down to an optimum (drowsy vs mood swings under control) and have been on 100mgs for about two years.

I'd sooner take Lamotrigine for the rest of my life and be well than not and be ill, but as a Bi Polar person I could only see that once I got better - I'm sure you know what I mean.

    Hi suzi

I too started on just 25mg per day and it was a gradual increase of 25mg each day until i reached 200mg. The positives certianly out weight the negatives. The only thing I am noticing now is that I think i was more controlled on 150mg rather than the 200mg. The side effects can sound quite drastic at first but with regular check up with your doctor this should be fine. At the beginning I did find that i was bruising alot but this has now stopped.

My daughter has just been prescribed Lamotrigine for her bi-polar. She was on epilim for about 5-6 years but a major upheaval occured last year and she has got worse. She was on anti depressants and sertraline which did not agree with her. then she had cyto--- and something else with lamotrigine. She says she feels \"not there\".! It is a week now. light at the end of the tunnel???? sad
