Lansoprazole - has it given you increased anxiety & depression?

Has anyone experienced an increase in anxiety and depression after taking Lansoprzole (or another PPI eg omeprazole etc) for some months? I really think it is contributing, particularly to the anxiety.

Hi. Yes but it didn't take me that long. I had sudden unwarranted anxiety symptoms about 2 days after starting Rabeprazole. I had prior GAD history for which I was treated for 12 years. I had been entirely symptom free for about 7 years and anti-anxiety medication free for 3 years when this happenned and upon extensive evaluation my psychiatrist was pretty sure I was not relapsing. It came out of nowhere. By day 5 my vision was blurry and I got severe headaches too. I stopped it after 5 days and was given Ranitidine instead by my gastrologist. The H2 blocker did not give me the same symptoms. My anxiety symptoms began to ease up about 2 days after discontinuing Rabeprazole...Gastrologist was unconvinced, but i have so much history I can tell when something is up because of my head and when it is not in my head. smile

Hi - unfortunately I can't tolerate ranitdine. I really do think the lansoprazole is increasing the anxiety (& possibly depreession) and making it a steady state so it means I am looking for something to fix it on which with depression and anxiety anyway is awful. It is making my health anxiety intensify and affecting me badly.

What about another PPI maybe? Are you taking it for GERD or is there a confirmed ulcer or something? There is also the possibility that slowed digestion because of PPI is causing the increase in anxiety symptoms. Or the condition you are taking it for is. Just before I come down with a cold or flu I get anxiety symptoms. I imagine any inflammation can cause this too. And as you say there is the mind role as well. Being treated for something long term (especially if you don't have a clear diagnosis or have an uncertain outlook) certainly would make many people depressed, anxious or both. At the same time, are you taking anything for anxiety? It can only help while you have to take PPIs - hopefully that won't last too long either.

I've tried all the others and thhey make the anxiety etc much worse plus pantaprozole made me feel horribly unwell. I have to take it indefinitely at the moment due to gastritis and I am trying to fin an antidepressant I can tolerate and take long term so that will likely make things worse for the stomach.

many antidepressants tend to dissolve in the intestines not the stomach, thus reducing possibility for irritation. Antidepressants tend to help with gastritis as they tend to provide some relief from tension - stress is the number one cause of gastritis according to most doctors i have spoken to - each said if you can take some form of anti-anxiety therapy it can only help gastritis, not make it worse. This was actually true for me. Best wishes either way. You are not having fun that's for sure!
