Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair
Posted , 6 users are following.
After reading, searching, googling, checking~ I finally made my decision to do laparoscopic incisional hernia repair after May 2017 as on May 2017 I will going to HK visit my Grandma. Now I need some opinion, suggestion or any story about before and after laparoscopic incisional hernia repair with or without mesh.. I know I better ask my doctor but I want to know how you all doing after repair.
For your information, I develop a incision hernia on December 2016 at my belly incision which I removed my gallbladder on August 2016. My doctor said the hernia defect still small, maybe not yet 1 cm. Then he said can wait and see. Now I sometimes will feel burning sensation, ripping, pain and a feel like someone is playing your belly..
Thanks

Hi Shirley,
I have just watched the RADAR video ... I am absolutely staggered and appalled by the gung-ho, cavalier attitude of those “Notifying Bodies” and that no mechanism exists for ensuring that due diligence is performed when developing implantable devices like there is for drugs.
In 1995 I had a prosthetic heart valve implanted. I know it’s serial number. I can access the test results online for the tests that the manufacturer did prior to shipping the device and I have had no adverse effects from the device. I don’t know what processes exist to control the manufacture of prosthetic heart valves, maybe I was just lucky, either way I naively thought that the same high level of professionalism would be applied to the manufacture and use of all implantable devices.
At the present time I have an abdominal incisional hernia and I was very concerned about the horror stories I have seen on this forum from people who have had meshes implanted. However given the high rate of recurrence for other techniques/approaches I was resigned to the fact that I might have to have one implanted.
When I eventually saw my elected consultant surgeon he said he would use a Component Release (referred to as CST in the states) technique which involves freeing one of the abdominal muscle layers to form a patch over the hernia thus forming a tensionless repair. No mesh would be used. I am mightily relieved.
So I got lucky again! ……. maybe, I haven’t had the procedure yet ………. The thing that worries me now is that one really has no way of knowing in advance what will happen or be used during surgery, after all I won’t be in a position to give my approval, even if I knew how to evaluate what was happening, once unconscious. I can request a copy of the surgical notes/report but I’m not sure I’ll get it or be able to interpret it if I did and anyway it would be too late to say "I don't give you permission to do that", especially since I will have signed a release form prior to the surgery.
Selphie,
I’m in agreement with Shirley; research meshes very carefully and thoroughly, ask your consultant about the Component Release technique, watch the RADAR video that Shirley mentions and I wish you good luck.
Tell us how you get on.
Regards,
Phil.

Hi Selphie, I am sure Shirley is correct. She knows what she is talking about. As we all know, she is not your doctor. Your doctor is going to know best but I would have some conversations regarding this with your doctor. I had surgery in September, 2015 for a small incesional hernia. My doctor said I had strong muscles so he just sewed it up. I am sure due to mesh issues. I went to the ER 10 days later for an intestinal obstruction due to adhesions. I spent 4 days in the hospital with an NG tube up my nose....not pleasant.
This hernia repair didn't work. May 2016 I went in for a mesh hernia repair. This was a major 5 hour surgery with a specialist brought in. This required 2 months of rest after surgery. The mesh is really large and covers my entire abdominal area.
Will I have issues in the future? My doctor doesn't think so. Here it is.....could I live without the mesh.....it appears no....not well. I had a Squamous Cell Carcinoma on my lip with Mohs surgery yesterday. I will always have a scar on my face. I don't want a scar but without it I would eventually die of cancer.
This is just to say, sometimes we need to do things to keep seviving.
My appendix ruptured on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean and was airlifted to the Azores. A lot of internal damage was done but had to be done or I would not have survived.
We all have to do what we have to do. If mesh has to be put in, then you need to get it done. Many people survive just fine with it. They are just not talking about it on the internet.
