large cyst

I've just had an ultrasound and have been told I have a 23cm ovarian cyst on my left side. So far this is all I know and am waiting on an appoinment with a gynecologist. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a cyst this large and how was the surgery and recovery? I'm super nervous and just want to know!

hi, i have 17 cm ovarian cyst, which was dermoid. Surgeon did was open laparatomy due to large size. I recovered for about 3 weeks.. 1st 3 days was so painful, i can't barely sleep. My wound was below my navel and above my pubic bone.

How much time did you have to take off for work, that whole 3 weeks or like a week? I'm currently in school and im worried about having to take too much time off and fall back.

I am much older than you, but I think you should give yourself a month...the surgery needs time to heal. You will feel OK in 2 to 3 weeks but you won't be fully healed and you need to rest and take it easy.

School...you will be able to study and stuff I think after two to three weeks....my guess. The first week for sure not.

Hi Kara, I had a 23 cm cyst on my ri ght ovary removed 3.5 weeks ago. I had a midline vertical incision from my belly to my pubic bone n order to remove the cyst in one piece. I had trouble getting in and out of bed and walking for the first few days, but you need to do it do it. My back was sore and itchy from laying around. I stayed in the hospital for a full week and I am glad I did. By the time I went home. I was ready. People brought me food for the first two weeks which was very nice, but I didn't need too much help and I am doing well. The first few days are a blur and the third day was the worst and most challenging...physically and emotionally for me. But it goes fast, they have great drugs to help your symptoms and it is behind me now. I face new challenges but I am more informed than I was. I had never had an experience like this and a voided doctors and hospitals. Now I am more accepting of what comes along. You want to get rid of this thing as soon as possible. I looked pregnant and got full feeling easily but I didn't have other symptoms. I could push my tumor around as it was so large and evident. Is that what yours is like? I hope this helped. I am in the US so your story will be a bit different but feel free to ask me anything. Be strong, be positive, and good luck getting this taken care of. All the best. Virginia

Yeah I would imagine they'd have to cut right open 23cm is not small. I actually get to see the gynecologist on monday to find out everything, just super nervous, waiting is my worst enemy. I overthink it too much. Did they have to remove your ovary as well or was it fine? My only symptoms have been bloating and looking pregnant. I weighted about 160lbs last year and lost over 20lbs over the summer working out and thats when I noticed I was having troubles losing weight in my stomach, now i know why!

That was me too. Bloating and looking pregnant. Lost weight and still looked fat in the middle. Sounds like the same song. Be prepared for a longer recovery than the 2 or 3 weeks you were thinking. I actually have to go back for an additional surgical biopsy to make sure I am clear as I had some negative info in my pathology report. The recovery after the first week isn't bad. The first few days are the hardest. Emotionally, it's a roller coaster that I am still on as I face more surgery once I heal. Best of luck to you and ask whatever you need to ask.

    Hi Kara,

I had a 36cm cyst on my right ovary and had both removed via laparotomy nearly 7 weeks ago, surgery went well, I was a little wobbley first few days after surgery but then was ok. My wound has taken a while to heal but overall operation/recovery is going well!

    Take care xx

Hi, yes....they found a 28cm x 24cm x 20cm cyst on 18th January. Had bloods and MRI done since. Surgery now planned for 30th March. I've been told to expect minimum of six weeks off work post op due to being unable to lift or drive. The consultant said to me that risk of rupture is very low with a cyst so large so that is good news. Not quite sure where the incision will be...my cyst is on my left side too right up to my ribs. Will keep you posted. Hope all goes well for you.

Yeah I finally got to see the doctor. He says its okay for me to wait until im done this semester of school that way I have the summer to recover. Just hoping for nothing to happen while I wait! Since my cyst is just fluid filled they're also pretty sure they can do it laprascopiclly so less recovery time, but if any complications they'll do an incision. Good luck on the surgery! Hope to hear how it goes.
