Large hiatal hernia

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have a 9 cm hiatal hernia that is twisted through my esophagus. I see the surgeon in 4 days. I have been on a liquid diet since I sent to emergency room last month. My symptoms are severe pain in shoulder and back, constipation, anemia, dizziness and fainting. Even yogurt gives me pain. I am sometimes up through the night in pain. I am afraid of the surgery and also afraid not to have it. I do not look forward to the recovery process. I am 69 years old 5'3" and 160 pounds.

This is going to sound silly. Try eating small bites while standing.

I have a sliding HH and frequently I have pain while trying to swallow and difficulty in actually swalloing the food (it gets stuck in my esophagus.

But if I stand up there are no problems.

I don't know why this works but I think that sitting down (especially with belted pants, puts increased pressure in the abdomen which pushes the stomach more forcefully through the hiatus.

    Good luck

I haven't had surgery yet.  I'm in a "watchful waiting" period and trying to lose weight.  I'm male, 5'10", and 205 pounds.

Dear Tammy, thank you . I need hear that. My surgeon specializes in hiatal hernias. I see him tomorrow. He has been doing it for over 39 years. I know I have to get it done. I feel better now, because I was feeling alone. Nobody can understand unless you are going through it. I am a severe anemia due to the continued loss of blood. Again, thank you for sharing.
