Large incision anterior THR

Just got to see my incision for the first time. Surgery 1 week ago. Muscle sparing anterior total hip replacement. Shocked at size of incision and # of staples. 29 staples and 8" incision. Won't see surgeon for a week. Surgeon is best in SE US at this type of surgery. Therapist says incision length may be due to the amount work they had to do. Was expecting incision 1/2 the size at most. Anyone else experience similar?

2 months post op THR anterior approach (NE USA). My incision scar without bandages is about 4 inches. It appeared twice as long bandaged, which came off after two weeks). I didn't have staples though. The incision was closed with dissolving stitches

underneath and glue on the outer layer. My surgeon also uses a robotic arm for this procedure. The practice has a line I can call to speak with a Nurse or PA to answer questions at any time. Maybe you can call the office and ask them to look at the surgical notes and give you an explanation for the longer than expected scar. Then you can ask the Dr. any additional questions at your next appointment. I'm sure there is a good reason 😃. The most important thing is that the surgery was a success and you will get your life back! Scars will fade. For me, the first two weeks were the hardest and I saw (and still see) miles stones every week. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

My anterior THR, done in April, is 5 inches. No staples were used. My indent has been lessening a lot during the last month with additional exercise and massaging the incision area twice daily. No complaints for the advantage of wonderful mobility.

ive done the massges and everything i think he never put the muscle back into place and its misaligned and thats why my knee cap isnt in line too have tried evrything we think the dislcation caused the tear as well cause its all the left side my knee caps arnt straight i had a dislocated hip for 37 hrs in the town hospital before rush to regina sask i was told u have within 6 hrs to fix any sort of dislocation but is wasnt fixed in the times frame so it cause tissue and mucle damage and its numb beide the scar and the scar is bumpy i had a lose stitch from the inside come through a staple hole after stamples were all out and it was huge amd he just yanked it out and i can feel something on the inside beening ripped apart still waiting on a ct to be done

It does depend on the amount of work they had to do. Better a big scar as a result of them having suitable space to work in and see properly, than a small one and side effects. Mine is 7 inches long, and had 24 staples on the side of my leg, almost invisible now. After it was healed I used bio oil to ensure suppleness and fading.

Thats interesting as I had similar surgery for THR Left hip in the UK Jan 19 and my scar is less than 4 inches long. I have just returned from holiday where this time last year I was having difficulty getting around the resort. This year I am 'free' again and found myself looking at women's thighs simply at scars where it had obviously been a hip replacement. There were many very long scars from older techniques.

I also had desolving inner stitches and Glue outer so the scar is extremely neat.

hello my scar is all healed now its very indented and the mucsle that was there was pushed over to the side and is stuck there after i had my hip replacment they went in again same spot to do a revision but think the dislocation caused damage in there and myself and my family dr think this is not normal the scar too feels bumpy and this was done dec18 2018 waiting for xrays to come back and waiting to get a ct scan to find out whats going on. now im having issues i just had a knee scope and theres an posterior lateral bundle tear he never fixed it yet but said something was wrong with my kneecap so yet again more scars to sdd to my body i wonder though if my hip muscle is misaligned if it would cause my knee to be the way it is

I had a 45 staples scar after surgery. No standard revision (was an accident) but still a shocker I can tell you.

i would rather have a longer incision so the surgeon would have the appropriate access to do a good job. it is a long term outcome for many years of use. i have had three thr and in my experience the incision usually almost disappears in time.

i understand that the technique is advertised to be a smaller incision. not necessarily reality. sometime what is seen during surgery can change many outcomes for a reason. once you see your surgeon there will be a very good reason. mostly for a better outcome for you.

many types of scar creams available OTC can help reduce scars. its temporary and in many cases the battle scars of what many hippies are proud of after what we had endured for a better and less painful life.
