Large ovarian cyst, worried?

I'm 20. I've been having on and off abdominal pain that started in my lower right abdomen since June 15, but it started a few days after my period ended.
It was worse then, to the point where it hurt to walk. But over the past few weeks the pain comes and goes in varying degrees. I did get extremely bloated at times and have irregular-looking BM's but recently my BM's have been normal.
I went for a complete abdominal ultrasound last Friday, and they said they found a 16cm ovarian cyst in my right ovary. Two days ago I went for a pelvic ultrasound and they said they found a 2cm cyst on my right ovary. And yesterday, I went for a CT scan and they said they apparently found a 26cm cyst on my LEFT ovary.
It's strange because I felt the pain in my right side first. I've only very occasionally felt pain and discomfort in my left side and then it was usually bloating.
The pain has seemed to lessen a bit and is not as bad as it was weeks ago. They say I need surgery and they'll call me back with the official results later.
Is surgery mandatory to do as soon as possible? And are there any foods that could make the cysts worse/larger? (Just wondering so I could avoid them.)

Hi Gabrielle, no, putting lotion on your skin won't have affected the CT scan.
Your doctors seem to be doing everything they can to get the problem sorted out.
We all get small cysts that release eggs when we ovulate, and sometimes they don't go, and can fill with fluid.
I had a large one removed last year, it was called a simple cyst and was fluid filled, it caused a lot of bloating.
I'm sure your Dr's will do what is best for you, mine was removed using a laparoscope, three small cuts, under anaesthetic, and it was easy to recover from.
Try not to worry, and keep us updated, all the best, Laura.x.
