last two questions for now, stiffness? and THR? thanks again

Hi  just to ask please if the stiffness goes after op? or are you prone to this ongoing,  in surrounding areas?   it has gone with this injection at the moment mostly

Also  when you write  THR  is this the actual ball replacing the head  or is it  more?    (replacing more than head? )

taking it by the horns now as had enough pain and hobbling and compromise,  a little bit inside is doubting,  what if,  but at 61  got things id like to do for sure,   know i wont be tap dancing again though  smile   well maybe a quick time step in the kitchen,  got a grandson to chase     lol xx   pauline xx

Stiffness still on going for me at week 11. My THR is metal peg into femur with ball and new cup in socket

THR is the ball (head of femur) with peg into the shaft of femur and a cup in the socket (acetabulum).  A hemi-arthroplasy is just the section on the femur and is fitted when the socket is in good condition.

hi tired-physio ---- i have a question about stifness and muscle pain - do you a good cream that alleviate this?  I tried tiger balm and something similar - actualy spend a fortune already but nothing helps ....thank you for your comments -- really good and informative -

Having watched this surgery years ago, I described it as a cross between butchery and mechano!  The tissues get a thorough mawling so it's not surprising stiffness and discomfort last for a long while afterwards.  Also, scar tissue will always tighten and shorten.  I can't recommend a particular cream but think it is the massage action that is more effective.  Massage creams are not easily absorbed into the skin, to allow continued massage.  I tend to use massage wax.

Hi Pauline.  I had a left THR (total hip replacement) 8 weeks ago.  There was no choice in type I had, so I had metal post and ball in a plastic socket and it was cemented.  I knew what to expect as attended information session at hospital the week before.  From reading other posts, it seems to depend on where you are in the country as to what type is put in.

As for stiffness, I used lashing of arnica gel on any bruised and sore bits.  Waited a few weeks until I put it directly onto scar.  Also took ibuprofen and paracetemol (as given by hospital) too.

You will be sore and stiff for a good few weeks, but the main thing the pain goes! I am now at the point where I almost forget I have had an op. Though lack of sleep and heels hurting if I lie on my back remind me!!

As you probably have already read, take it slowly, do the exercises and don't excert yourself.  You will know when you have done too much, as you will feel it (i found that out).

I am nearly 6 months post op and I don't have any stiffness except what is normal for a 72 year old if they have been sitting for too long.  THR is replacement of the whole joint, i.e. ball and socket and stem.

THANKS BOTH     yes perhaps some of the stiffness will go,  the bit that was associated with the ball  not rolling around maybe?

my osteopath says it feels superglued in but he has got it rotating better to keep me mobile,   he pushed for me to have the injection as he could tell I was in deniall then!  hes genuine! smile

was better today at supermarket after injection but its like its still all there just underlying,   which it is!

ive used arnica for years for childrens bruises,  tooth extractions, daughters squint surgery,  everything,   I take it in tablet form too

thanks all   you have helped me move on  and I wont forget you,  phoning the secretary asap to try speed up a bit as the waits are so long around here and yes,  expect each hospital to their own re the types they use  -  often cost too isnt it?

    pauline  xx
