Lateral Ankle and Foot Rotation on Xray. Help with relieving ankle pain?

Hello.  Over the last 2 years, I've had ankle pain that has gotten progressively worse after a pregnancy.  Many of the Podiatrists and Orthopedic Surgeons blame my Tarsal Coalition, however, I am not convinced that is the issue.  It started in both feet, however, the right foot corrected itself.  My recent X-ray shows that I have a slight lateral ankle and foot rotation in the left.  I attribute this to a pair of very hard custom orthotics that pushed my feet outward. The podiatrist was trying to "fix" a Tarsal Coalition but probably should have concentrated on oversupination.   Another indication is that I have fat pad syndrome on the outer lateral heel of the left foot.  The symptoms started out as Peroneal Tendinitis in both feet which corrected itself with orthotics and ASO EVO braces.  As time progressed in the orthotics (3 mos), I began having issues with Peroneal Muscle spasms when I put pressure on my ankle and walked at a normal pace.  This was a cyclical type of pain, where when I was sedentary - it slowly went away.  When I started to weight-bear a little more, it would come back.  Over Christmas, I was on crutches.  Recently, I decided to play around with the custom orthotics - thinking that they may not be right for me.  I'm using a Birkenstock Orthotic with a Heel Lift and lateral Wedge to correct the over supination and to allow the tendon to heel.  Although I can get around a little more, I can't walk far distances - I need someone who understands biomechanics and can give some advice on how to support my foot without surgery.  I'm convinced the right orthotic, wedge, insert, etc can help with my problem.  I'm heading in the right direction but can't get past this small hurdle without some "expert" knowledge.  Anyone have any ideas how to correct a slight lateral ankle/foot rotation and get me walking further distances!?  Thanks!  smile

Hi I too have tarsal coalition in both feet and am at 5 weeks recovery from an ankle fusion. I suffered 20 years with foot pain and swelling. It's supposed to be a 16+ week recovery and I'm doing well with pain and still no swelling since my surgery. It is a long recovery and I hope you find an alternative to help you.

      Thank you.

Were you diagnosed with TC as a child due to foot pain? I'm trying to determine if the TC is really causing the issue.  I had no foot issues as a child.

I was able to get a handle on the muscle spasms with some inserts and wedges in my shoes.  Nothing, though, has proven consistent yet.

I was 17 and working my first job when I noticed after an 8 hour shift my feet would be sore and stiff, then after a few more shifts I noticed the swelling and not being able to put weight them at all and was crawling around. I saw many different doctors and podiatrists and no answers 😢 20 years later they finally gave me answers and hope. I had a few sprains when I was a kid but nothing major. I'm recovering quite well from the incision site, the depression of not being able to do anything myself, and I have some movement in my ankle and no swelling at all.....but I still have a ways to go before weight bearing and getting back to normal.
