Partial paralyzation of the right foot, in which I'm unable to move my feet up or down. Drop foot and numbness below my right knee are what I am experiencing

    Hi Yolanda,

I have sciatic nerve damage from revision left total hip replacement Oct 2013. I had to sign paper of possible nerve damage with surgery. Did you sign paper of possible nerve damage??

I didn't think would happen because it didn't happen with my first thr. I'm having so many problems after my revision it's ridiculous I cannot walk for long period of time so much pain.

    Good luck

    Let me know what happens

so sorry to hear this ...

Have you asked a lawyer already ?

I know someone who filed a law suit because of drop foot post THR surgery, however, what I remember, it was a class action lawsuit due to recalled prothesis that was used ...

good luck and please let us know how you are getting on okay?

    Hi Yolanda,

Usually the soft tissue surrounding the nerve during the retraction required in the procedure or the incorrect placement or weighing of retractors causes compression on the sciatic nerve. This is always assumed as part of the proceedure to have access to the femur area. Many feel siatica pain after surgery not knowing why and some of the lucky ones don't end up with foot drop while others suffer serious back pain injury to the sciatic nerve after THR. Happened to me the second time, my back hurt worse than the hip replacement

Every surgeon agrees that even a partial instrumentation injury to the sciatic nerve will cause a foot drop.  So a small mistake could cause a patient a lifelong injury. Costing lives to be changed forever.

This has always been my fear, after three THR and revision. I have seen many patients with foot drop. Usually at the doctors office. I happen to run into a few and they have told me their story. It's something that is never talked about before surgery. Yet we are required to sign off before surgery that there are many risks. That's does not make foot drop or any other injuriey OK. I have been involved in a recall. Very painful implant a few years ago. Totally changed my life, relationships & health forever.

Its very difficult to sue a doctor for malpractice for foot drop. It's very unfortunate that this has happened and I hope that there is a better way to help more patients come together and find some compensation for a surgical error . You are fornuate I read that your doctor admitted the error. Will the doctors insurance settle with you if you have representation for a injury that could have been avoided and life long?

Keep  posting let us know how your doing. My heart goes out to you knowing that you will adjust it takes time. All of us hippies know this could happen again to others . No one is immune to surgical errors unfortunately. There should be better standards put in place to avoid this in the future.

Many blessing sent sent your way.

Thank you for responding to me. I wish all I had to deal with was the drop foot because this sciatica nerve palsy is unbearable.  The worst part is I have not been able to work so I don't have much income coming in. I am a realtor so I need my right foot to drive with, now I'm struggling to pay bills so I had to stop therapy a long time ago and because of that I have been loosing tissue in my right knee. It's very difficult to walk. I wish his insurance company would settle for something. In the mean time all I can do is pray.

I totally get your predicament. I too suffered for 5 years until finally something was done. It a nightmare when THR goes wrong. My first went well and still after 18 years it's still on good shape.

It can be a long painful journey. Have you seen a spine specialist and had any referals for pain  ? PT WATER THERAPY. ?

You are so brave to share your story dealing with sciatica palsy it is so difficult and painful.

Many healing prayers sent your way.🙏🏽
