a quick phone call to your doctor might help also. if you ahve been taking laxatives for such a long time then it is possible that your bowel has become used to them. the doctor may be able to advise you how long it takes for  things to return to normal.

hi leanne, i understand what your going thru, and how bad it is for you, i have had problems for 30 years, when i was told i had a spastic colon, [not working properly,] had anal stretch, no good, also had a fisure,[ a tear], was given fybrogel, now and again, various tests done, but didnt understand alot,as i was in my 20s,you just go along with it all, then as the years went on trying to grim and bear it, i then started with diarheaa, given the tabs to stop it ,so on and so on,until i had to evacuate for two years as could not go, until it got to the point i went to see a different consultant at hospital, but he was in surgery,so explained to the doctor that was there,i didnt know how much more i can take of this, given small enemas to do at home but with no avail, nothing, only a slight pain here and there, then i was confused, thinking is something else , until the 5th night after the hospital woke with terrible pains, rang emergency doctor who told me to get an ambulance as quick as poss, i was given 1 full enema, and was violently sick, put on observation unit, had another full enema, and sick all over again, went home the next day, with laxatives,  that was three months ago, had more test since and told i have a evacuation problem, hence spastic colon, was at the hospital again today to see consultant because of review app,and bleeding , only to be told, he will be with me in a minute ,as i was in side room waiting ,the other doctor came in instead, who seen me last time ,so she was in and out of the room talking to me then consultant, and i have come away with another laxative, and to go back in 6 months, the only thing is i dont think i will ever be able to use the toilet without them and it sounds to me leanne your the same, but i am going to try the beverly travis laxative mixture i found on this site, this is my 1st post so please excuse any mistakes i have made, and good luck leanne, i would try the beverly travis mixture, then maybe we wont have to live on laxatives forever, and it would be doing our health some good as well, take care

My heart goes out to you, and I have the same problem with my bowel although am reliant on home enemas and suppositories.  However, I started using Herbolax last week and it is having some effect ie a little natural bowel movement rather than nothing at all.  Might be worth a try?
