Lazy at 8 Weeks

Posted , 12 users are following.

I am 8 weeks post op. From THR because of displacement and arthritis. I have never been very energetic but lately I am a certified couch potato. I try to walk everyday and do an hour of therapy 3x week, but other than that I have no desire to do anything. When I do try housework I lose energy and will very fast. I still take 5 mg. oxy 4-5 a day for discomfort. Any suggestions.

    Hi Riley,

I am another couch potato l ike you.  Six weeks post-op THR.

I find I have not much stamina. Wlaking for two thirds of a mile twice a day but need a lot of sitting down and resting in between. I cannot stand for long or queue in a shop for more than a couple of minutes.

I am hoping to do some gentle exercise but I think I need to regain my strength more before I tackle anything physical.

I will try a bit of aquarobics if the surgeon gives me the go-ahead at my post-op check.

Although I wish I had more energy, It's comforting to know that other hippies are experiencing tiredness at this point of recovery.

Recovery takes time. I'm almost 6 months out and I still feel beat after doing very little. I'm not a couch potato though, my scar hurts a lot when I sit, so I do more standing and walking than sitting. I still take Ibuprophen and a Tramadol at night. It's not your meds it's the major surgey that has done havoc to our bodies. Take it easy, and take care.

OXY - fantastic stuff, kills the pain, BUT side affects are that it slows down the exchange of oxygen across your lungs, and that would definatley affect your energy levels. BUT after this length of time you cannot just stop taking it, if your are taking very 5 hours for example, you have to start stretching it out to every 6 hours, and then every 7 hours, then every 8 hours, over some weeks, I think you get the idea.  Discomfort I sure is a mild description for the pain your are in. I was able to step down slowly as above from OXY to Panadol Osteo, then to nothing by six weeks, but I had a very good result with my Right side THR, Left THR not so good, still top up with OXY occasionally when I have overdone it, and yes it does make me very dopey and sleepy, but most of the time can manage with Panadol, but making progress. Swimming helping, 3 days a week in deep heated pool, treading water with a pool noodle (woogle or water log) under my arms., BLISS.

Thanks for the step down information. I'll give it a try. Problem is I start getting really uncomfortable and cranky about 5 hrs out.

Maybe, if I start slowly stretching out 1/2 hr. at a time longer it will go easier.

      Maybe of

Are you taking Panadol or maybe Tylenol, you can take up to 6 a day, after that they WILL KILL your liver.

Riley - half an hour if necessary, its what works for you, but keep up the one step down for as much as a week before the try the next step down.  I occurs to me that you might be like me, I addict very easy, the hospital knows about it, I have reported myself, as I don't want to go through it all again, but they are very sympathetic at the same time, and explained to me I might have to do the step down process again, thank goodness I didn't, as they didn't use morphine this time. It is possible you are addicted to OXY, when you try to not take it the pain levels go up.  I was after 9 days on morphine in hospital, nightmare. I had to be treated in emergency, thank goodness for a young Dr who told me about step down. If I remember about every 4-5 day I was able to step down another level without too much discomfort.
