Hey Susan. Don't be ashamed this is something you can't help but ask for a referral to a specialist. You may be able to get some other form of treatment that will help. Don't suufer in silence! That is what pur doctors are there for. If you have already seen a gastro, asked to be rereferred for further treatment. Sorry I have no suggestions to make which may help but sure others on here will. X

Immodium certainly does help prevent loose bowel movements. My GP says there is no harm taking them for as long as needed, just to try to avoid taking them so frequently that they cause constipation. He suggested increasing the amount of fibre, by a very small amount, in your diet as opposed to taking senna.
I do agree, though, that you should see your doctor again to get some proper advice or treatment rather than just relying on over the counter medications.
Good luck - I'm sure there will be an effective way to get things under control that works best for you.

Don't be ashamed my friend, because this forum shows you that you're not alone! It can be really scary because this is the kind of stuff that mean people who don't understand will embarrass you over. But, you'll get through it, we all did. Just know that it CAN BE CONTROLLED!! It just takes time and patience. And know that the kind of food you eat can make a world of difference too.

I would increase fibre when constipated and take oranges and prune juice. If this is not enough senna maybe helpful. When having loose motions, avoid insoluable fibre and top up with immodium according to your doctor's recommendations.

I was told to switch from a sugary cereal to a more healthy cereal and in her opinion porridge was the best option and there are some posts earlier in year saying why can't I eat porridge as made me very ill to start with, such as the explosive comments, but unsure whether my body had to get used to this food but I eat daily now and I am much better for it. I was told by a consultant to stop taking artificial products as I was risking my body becoming reliant upon them.

IBS is extremely complicated, and what works for you, is not going to work for everybody else. I absoutely HATE IT when peopl withou first hand experience, give you this generic answers. Furthermore, I say define wtf is "healthy?" A lot of foods that are concidered "healthy" from all the "experts" is not healthy for me. I can't stand when people choose to omit genetics from the equation. These "experts" or "know it alls" always leave the conversation with the energy of "it's your fault, you better start eating better!" As though I never heard that sh** before.

I was also told recently because I could eat certain foods I may not even have IBS. My doctor and local hospital disagree. Personally I have never really been quite sure what IBS is really as I find my experiences differ to many in here as I suffer sickness with mine which is rare. I was about to be sick in hospital yesterday and nurse walked right in threw a cup of water into my hand and said drink then took me down. The fear of being taken down stopped the sickness. I certainly know at the moment what is not heathy
. All I know is I ruined one relationship because I spent more of it in the loo than with her. We are still friends but very difficult to be with someone who is sick all the time. At the moment I have some weird blood issue and she was the first person I contacted. Apparently I am a special case but if it is not one thing with me it is another. Every test I have puts me on the edge of being a diabetic without actually being one. It is strange. This blood issue I have is very common also in diabetics. I also have a diabetic leg related issue. In short I am falling apart.

First off, if the information did not come directly from your doctor, tell said persons to mind their f***ing business; and tell them you do not appreciate unsolicted advice. You know, there is a reason why doctors avoid dealing with other doctor's patients; it's because there is a lot of sh** they don't know about their patient, AND the liability. So why the hell would ANYBODY feel the balls to think that they know just as much or even more than your doctor? Just stop them in their tracks and tell them to shut up. Period.
Even then, unfortunately, sometimes even I had to remind one practitioner I was seeing, there is a difference between what you read in your medical books, and the statistic you read in journals, and real life experience that the patient has outside his office.

That is exactly my point and in in medical dictionaries it mentions colon and abdominal pain but never mentions sickness.
I have suffered with this for about 5 or 6 years and still do not understand it.

Yeah, it's very complicated. And what makes it even more complicated is, like diabetes, it will be different for everyone. there is no "cookie cutter," or box they can just dump all of us into. Real discoveries happen when professionals listen to their patients. But then again, a lot of patients are too embarrassed and scared to say anything. Or they feel "let the professional handle it, they know more than I do." I guess the bottom line, when it comes to a chronic illness that literally effects your ability to move around, is a personal journey that each individual has to walk.
