Leaking wound

There's a dark patch showing through my bandage. The bandage was only replaced yesterday before I came home. What should I do, not worry about it, replace it or what?

Thanks.

No don't touch it yourself, have a talk to your regular GP.

A small patch of leakage should be OK, would not be surprised you have a little leakage. You will find its probably all sealed up with blood, some clear fluid leakage, that has now all dried up, and all of those help keep out any chance of infection.

If it is soaking wet and dark patch spreading, and continues to be that way, maybe a little more concerning.

Don't be fobbed off by your GP's reception, you should not really be leaving the house until about 10 days after your surgery, or thats what my notes say.

Keep in touch darling, and rest up, best thing you can do, I think.

Do your ankle pumps, and if you can buttock squeezes, just to keep that blood moving in your legs.

      It's just a small patch.

      Thanks Lyn, good advice.

      Best wishes to you 💛

I had leakage blood and yellow stuff, plasma? from both scar and the 'drain hole' just below the scar, for about a week. No one seems that bothered about it as it wasn't a steady flow but did mean that I changed my dressings a bit more often.

I got some 10 inch rubberised dressings from the minor injuries unit but it all calmed down after a week.

I had really bad leaking from my first operation, I went to my surgery to get the nurse to change it, she then arranged for a district nurse to come out regularly to change it for me.

Second operation (same leg, same hip), hardley any leakage, my wife was able to change the hospital supplied dressing OK.

These are BIG dressings (10cm x 25cm), not usually stocked by many - see my web page on "Hospital Recovery" for a picture.  Internet address is in my personal info. and the moderators Useful Resources thread ....

    Morning

How is the patch now? Is it the same or has it increased?

I had quite a bit of leakage after my staples were removed for a couple of weeks they gave me extra dressings when I went back. I think it was because I was on daily blood thinning tablets. My husband changed the dressing a couple of times and then after a week or so the dark patch hadnt grown so removed the dressing and no problems afterwards. I am now 4 months post op and doing well. All the best Julie

Hi all, thanks for your replies. I don't think it's grown much bigger and going by Kate's description it sounds like it's my drainage hole. All good.

The hospital I was at didn't give me a take home pack of anything and I've only got the one pair of pressure socks! Cheapskates! Wait till they read my scathing Google maps review when I write it, they'll regret their parsimonious ways.

I had a whole party bag full of goodies, spare TEDs, Ted putter-onner, wound dressings, drain dressings, wound care leaflets, exercise booklet, appointment cards for staples physio & consultant, slide sheet, seat pad (huge dressing to put on seat in case of leakage out of the dressing), loads of pills.

About the only thing they didn't supply to go home was a nurse lol

I'm sure your wife would have loved it if they had given you a nurse 😁

      What I wouldn't give for a TED putter-onner!

My wife was great as my nurse. cheesygrin

Everyone should have a TED putter-onner - it's a nylon bag, slips over the foot, then the TEDs slide over your foot so easily - it's on my website page "Admission", made by NeoSlip.

Oh that's right! I remember reading about that when I was pre op. I have a vague recollection of reading on the forum about using a plastic bag in place of the nylon. I must get that sorted today.

Thanks for reminding me Graham, you're a champion.

I would get any ooze checked out by the district nurse, they will call round any time of the day and see if it needs more closer attention, I know I would have been worried about it and would have felt easier with it being looked at by a properly trained eye...Just to be on the safe side as infection sets in so quickly in the home in bed and on normal chairs, not anyones fault, just normal life, I would get it looked at if the Ooze is still coming out....Ian.

Thanks Ian, it seems to be stopped now but if it starts up again I will call in a nurse.

I am allergic to the most popular antibiotics which is a worry, but it looks okay at the moment.

I read somewhere that due to the antibiotic resistant strains of virus that are increasing scientists are developing nanobots to take up the fight.

My first dressing was changed in hospital, soaking wet, the next one was changed at home by the distric nurse and had a couple of patches. The next time was when the staples were removed, one biggish patch, she put another dressing on as there was a bit blood where the staples came out.  i was told I could take it off myself if I wanted the following Monday (staples removed Wed).

Took it off Monday this week and found I was leaking clear fluid, bit sticky, called the nurse and she said everything was fine and left another dressing.  It's still weeping a bit
