Learning to walk

Posted , 10 users are following.

How many new tricks can an old dog learn? I was going to title this “learning to walk again”, but in my case I don’t think I’ve ever walked properly.

Apparently if you walk properly you are more comfortable and use half as much energy as the flat footed gait I’ve had. I really want to learn to walk properly so I will eventually be able to walk further and enjoy it more. I’m only talking short walks and shopping here folks, but even these have been tough for me for the last 10 years. I'm declaring my goal here. I don't usually make goals, especially physical ones. So this is different for me!

So heel to toe, stand up straight and swing those arms. If anyone wants to know more there’s some good info on youtube under "heel to toe walking".

Does anyone want else interested in this?

I just posted to say try walking more slowly,

    quality more important than quantity!

I so agree Cathie. Quality walking is hard to achieve both physically and mentally, but once you've changed the gait the quantity will followfollow. I'm so excited about this!! I feel more hopeful about my future because of it!

    Hi Keena

This is a very helpful post. I have not had a THR yet, being very cowardly and fearful of making things worse.

What I did was request physiotherapy and had just four sessions with a lovely lady physio. I was impressed that aside from a programme of exercises she showed me how to walk better. This involved butt squeezing and heel to toe walking.

This convinced me I would manage to avoid surgery, wishful thinking!!

Not so unfortunately!! My lovely lady physio told me there is a problem which requires that I see  a specialist.

However I have strengthened my muscles which is useful whatever happens.

I have looked up the youtube site you mention  and found it really helpful!!

In common with so many aspects of health I believe we could prevent many problems by a sensible life style.

I am sure I have walked badly with incorrect posture all my life.

Thank you for this thoughtful info.

    Joy

My favourite on heel to toe walking is from Rehab and Revive on YouTube. I tried to post a link to this but the moderator thought it was spam. Oh well.

yes linnet - phew ... just did my walk and it took me forever - my problem right now is that I am still using some support walking outside and then I get confused - I live in right in the middle of the forest and walk on an uneven path - some times I take my 4wheel walker out as well - so I am trying to relax shoulders and hands, stand straight but soft knees - push with, what I hope are my bum muscles, forward, on toes to heel while swinging hips and not knowing what to do with my arms ...

phew - sheesh - get the picture ?

how do you girls do it?   The squirrels took a break from gathering nuts, just to watch me - I swear they  were LOL !

Oh my dear Lord .... no wonder my shins, thighs down to my ankles are hurting !!!!

I walk flat-footed, pushing front hips, crooked , --- I watched one of the you tube video's and will look at the one you suggesting -

what I am saying here that is not just the heel-to-toe motion but the rest of my body parts that need re-allignment -

and not to feel pushed and rushed by self and others - okay, kind of lonely walks ahead of me then (dense fog here - kind of beautiful, mysterious and depressing) -

oh no, I take y'all along with me

    love

    renee-

Yes Renee, we're walking with you! It's so eye opening! I've never been an active person and think that I have never walked properly. I love the encouragement of this group and know I will have a better outcome because of it.

Walking well requires so much concentration, but when I do it I feel so fabulous. Strong and straight and energetic!
