Left ankle fracture and dislocation with type 1 diabetes

I broke all 3 bones in my left ankle and dislocated it when I hit a wall while roller skating on Good Friday 4/14/17. I had orif surgery 4/20/17. They told me to wear a compression stocking on my good leg (right) post operation but did not tell me how long to leave it on. Anyone else wear a compression stocking on their good leg post op and if so, for how long? I see the doc one week post op but not sure what I need to do till then. I mostly sit with my leg elevated but am really bored.

I would wear it until you see your doctor as it's to stop blood clots developing.

Hi Wendie, yeah I wore mine on the good leg for the full 6 weeks I was in the cast after dislocated bimalleolar fracture. It was to discourage blood clots forming due to being largely sedentary (feet up being a total couch potato basically!) while NWB. I was advised to do so until I was FWB and reasonably active again. Hope that helps.

    Hi Wendie72

i fell and broke my ankle one month ago with a bimalleolar surgery. Titanium plate on one side and 2 large screws on the other side. I’m wearing a cast and will expect to wear it til after Christmas - then I will start Physical therapy to walk and bear weight again.

I’ve had type 1D for 42 years with tight control for the last 25 years. I’ve researched and found major U.S. hospital clinical trial results about the effect T1D has on bone fracture regrowth and union complications. It’s disheartening to read these studies. I’m writing you to see how your healing and recovery is coming along. I hope you are doing well. Thx
