Left hip replacement tomorrow

Posted , 11 users are following.

Well I'm having my left hip operation tomorrow and I'm really nervous. I had my left knee replacement last September and couldn't understand why I still had leg pain even though the surgeon said all was good with the knee.. finally figured out it was my hip ...I can't remember walking without pain . I think I'm worried incase I don't get the results I'm hoping for . I'm 56 and a couple of years ago was walking around 8 miles , swimming and being able to cut my own toenails, put shoes on etc....it just seems like I learnt to walk again after the knee operation and I will have to do it all again ...I've read mixed stories on here ...is there anyone else that is due the operation? Anyone just had it ?

I have only had a hip op, but most people say that a hip op is easier than a knee op. Good luck I am sure it will go well and you will not look back.

Good luck for tomorrow pennypops. No one knows how their recovery will go until you are living it. You have had a knee op do you know the operation itself is not a problem, if you are in the uk you will be on crutches on day 2 and your personal recovery journey begins.

I am sure you will sale through your recovery and be on here over the next six weeks making us all jealous. It is not a race, there are no medals, go at your own pace.

Hi I'm having posterior approach which seems to be very common in the UK. So restrictions...I'm not looking forward to trying to sleep on my back for 6 weeks

You will get through...I believe tho you can sleep on unoperated side with pillows between your legs before the 6 weeks..check with Dr....

Good luck Pennypops I've just turned 50 and I'm due my right hip replaced 6th August and shortly after my left too. I'm a little concerned too but the last 2 years have been dominated by the pain and with 5 children ranging from 8 to 16 I feel that I've lost those years with them because even a short walk is too painful So I'm sending you hugs and best wishes keep your chin up hopefully this will end our pain and give us our lives back again!

Thanks Connie! I never comment on any forums but I've been looking regularly on here and everyone seems so helpful and I've found it a real comfort reading everyone's story I've not got a lot to offer because I've not yet had the operations but I do have a lot of respect for all other people who are going through this!

This forum has been a comfort for me as well.

Try to get yourself in best shape possible if your not already there and you will do great...I'm sorry you have to wait until August...

Yes Lynne I remember how hard it was..I limped around for years. I worked on a horse farm so I was busy with that..didn't ride much because I was in pain..but regular farm chores..also I did treadmill on incline...I did the clam shell to ..bridge .planks.and used bands..the big rubber bands...I also stretched alot. Not much cardio because that was painful..I did gain weight too..but it's coming off slowly..seems like you are doing alot..I just tried to concentrate on muscling up and stretching..sorry I'm not much help..but I'm hear for you..🙏🙏

I believe that hip replacement is far easier to recover from than knee replacement. I am now doing things I never did before, like going regularly to the gym - to take off the weight I put on in the recovery rolleyes.

Good luck for tomorrow, keep us posted with your recovery.

Hey Pennypops, I'm 60 years old and it's been 16 days post-op since I had my TRHR (anterior). I've had both knees replaced and back surgery several years ago. Even though I'm starting my third week hip recovery, I noticed little improvements like pain decreasing (especially the more I walk), transitioning from a walker to a cane/crutch getting around the house. I even did two loads of laundry yesterday! The key is being patient, don't rush, ice, take meds and do post-op exercises everyday (and cry if you have to!). Sock and sneaker still a challenge on that right side. Mornings are the worst for me as I am in pain and very stiff upon awakening. Propping myself up at bedtime instead of laying on my back helps a bit upon arising in the morning. To me, recovering from knee surgery is worse than hip surgery. You're in my prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm at the hospital now and will be going to surgery in a couple of hours ...I'm going to have a spinal for anesthetic...

Good luck! In a couple of days you'll be home and on the mend. Each day is a little better. I'm at 3 weeks post op on 2nd hip.

If you've had a knee done you'll sail through.

      Keep us posted.
