Left iliac fossa pain - IBS?

Hello again,

My GP diagnosed me as probable IBS around 8 months ago following scans, bloods and CT with contrast.  Have had episodes of the urgency, LS, sometimes constipation, sometimes just quantity etc etc.  But never really any pain.  Was never given any medication but in fairness other than the urgency it hasn't caused me so much of a problem.

I am Female aged 55yrs.  Had menopause around 8 years ago.  Previously had endometriosis.

Last night I developed a really low abdominal grumble - like a cramp that went literally across the very lowest part of my abdomen.  Overnight it settled like a pin point pain in my left very lower abdomen.   Reminded me of period pains.  Makes me feel nauseous, can't get any relief with paracetamol etc.  I am windy, but stools OK, been only about 4 times today.  But I do feel a bit dizzy / strange.

Is this likely to be part of my IBS or is it possibly something else?  I don't want to mither my GP if it is IBS related.  But I don't want to ignore it if it doesn't sound like that is the cause.

Do I need to get some medication?   Sorry for the ramble x

Just to add, when I say dizzy / strange......I mean it feels a bit like when you get butterflies in your tummy.

Sounds very like IBS which can feel like period pain and can also be felt all over the abdomen and moves about.  I have had a twitching sensation in my abdomen which feels like a mouse is running around inside it.  The pain can be constant or come and go with the bowel habit changes and nausea.

It is up to you whether you want to take medication.  However, I find it useful to keep Buscopan and Nurofen to hand just in case I get a flare up. I only take them as and when I need them. Paracetamol isn’t much use for IBS pain especially if it gets bad.

Thank you Pippa, that has put my mind at rest somewhat.

Can you buy Buscopan or is it prescription only?

I am going to take some Brufen now before bed to try to get some sleep x

You can buy Buscopan over the counter.  This suits me better because going to doctors makes me anxious and puts mr more st risk of a flare up.

Thank you Pippa, I looked yesterday in the supermarket counter, but will go to Chemist this morning.  I took 2 x 400mg Brufen last night and I got a better sleep but it is pinging away again this morning!

My IBS used to affect me like that.  Sometimes I would get a pain free sleep after taking Nurofen but I would wake up to pain in the morning again.  Other times, the pain woke me from sleep.

      Hopefully Buscopan will help.

I agree that this sounds definitely like ibs symptoms. You need to find out what this is for certain. IBS can cause a range of symptoms that can worsen or show themselves over the years.

Hi Sam, what kind of things do you mean?

      thank you x

People get different symptoms with their IBS, including cramps, knots, pain, wind, problems eating certain food etc. IBS is a term used when doctors can't decide what is wrong.

Thank you Sam.  I agree - my GP is excellent but had previously put odds and sods down to IBS, but then continued with investigations (probably due to my anxiety at the time as my symptoms were wild and I dropped around a stone purely through the diarrhoea) and then told me that he had excluded everything else he could relate symptoms to and put it down to IBS.

Things settled. weight settled. just got little flare ups of LS but never pain before.  Thankyou for putting my mind at rest x

You could try Colpermin or Buscopan both of which you can buy over the counter at a chemist. If yuo find either of them help you can get them on prescription. Probably best to try them one at a time then if it helps yu know which one is helping.

    Hope this helps.

Take care and keep in touch

      Thank you Sarah.

I have got some Buscopan from the Chemist this morning and it has eased the tinkling pain quite a bit, although it is still there it is much lessened.

The BMs don't get me down - I suppose I have put up with them for so many years that I am used to them, so now I hope I can control any further pain better.

I did read about the Colpermin somewhere recently - are they effective?  x
