Left side head pressure, tender spot, neck issues

Hello, I am new here but I am a little concerned. I am a healthy 35yr old male however I have been dealing with left side head pressure for the last 5 weeks. I don't get a real bad headache but its mostly just pressure and its pretty much with me 24/7. I have noticed when I lay down or go to the gym with my headphones on it is not as bad but always there, I seem to feel it more when standing but again its always there even when sitting at my desk at work. I will list a few of my symptoms below in a moment but I did want to mention the last 2 years have been rough after going through a tough separation with my fiancée and only seeing my son a couple days a week instead of daily so my stress and anxiety was really bad for a while however I am dealing with that better now so I have a hard time believing this is stress related. I am a very anxious person and do not do well at the doctors, my blood pressure and heart rate go through the roof even just at a check up.

The last few months I have not felt like myself, I have had a bad stomach my whole life but it got worse around November 2015 and I was having chest pains and tightness, long story short I saw my doctor multiple times and was diagnosed with GERD and I also had an EKG and Stress Test Echo on my heart which all came out fine thank god. Now a couple months later I was finally feeling a little better, chest issues and stomach still kind of there but no where near as bad and then randomly get hit with this head pressure one Sunday night after just laying on my couch. I went to the doctor after 2 weeks of the head pressure and he tried 2 weeks of muscle relaxers thinking it was my neck, my neck is super tight especially left side where the head pressure is and he told me to stop going to the chiropractor. I was going to the chiropractor for just a couple months before all this happened because my neck and left shoulder always hurt (I work out in the gym and think part of it is from that, I used to lift very heavy but I don't as much anymore). The funny thing is a week before this head pressure started my chiropractor did his usual neck crack on both sides and I remember it almost hurting, feeling different then normal and sent pain through my head. I honestly wonder if he did something to me and if this is from my neck however almost 6 weeks and still feel the same? Advil doesn't do much, muscle relaxers didn't work. I am doing neck stretches and just bought a hand held massager this past week for my neck and head. My doctor did not think brain tumor at my visit based of my symptoms and said my reflexes were good.  Sorry for the long post but hoping for some help, my doctor is now referring me to a neurologist but I am trying to hard to push it off a little more hoping it gets better, I have enough medical bills and I am trying to tell myself this has to be from my neck or something that will heal eventually. I know brain tumors are pretty rare but of course I am having anxiety over that.

Symptoms:

-left side head pressure 24/7.

-some pressure in left eye and ear but not terrible.

-neck issues, especially left side, recently got a massage and the massage therapist said my upper back and neck were extremely tight. Chiropractor although I haven't been in a few weeks doctors orders said my C-1 or 2 joint cant remember which one was out of place. I have been doing neck stretches and using a tennis ball.

-some lightheadedness and fatigue, nothing crazy and could be stress since I think about this and worry all day.

-just noticed this week I have a tender spot on the bone top left back side of head.

-no weight loss, no fever, appetite ok for the most part, stomach ache some days but no vomiting.

I do get a little bit of facial tingles in the left side of my cheek and especially my chin, it is not constant and comes and goes. This did start a couple months before this and I went to the dentist because I still have 3 of my wisdom teeth. He did say they could come out and my bottom right one was coming in a little crooked and could be causing some pressure. He did I could hold off for a bit and it wasnt an emergency and that could be causing some of my chin numbness and tingles. Also I am constantly popping my ears because they feel a little blocked and my nose feels a little congested but this has been going on for a while and is not something new, maybe allergies

Hopefully some suggestions and feedback will help, I will see neurologist if this doesn't improve but again I am trying to wait just a little longer on that.

Im so glad I found this forum.

Ive been suffering since January this year 😫 my symptoms have worsened but started the same as many of you.

Head pressure and neck and shoulder pain on the left. A temple headache that felt like a hand on my head. Realised sinuses were inflamed and ears blocked but mainly on left. Knot in should on left and pain in neck at base of skull on both sides. Palpertations. Vertigo. Spaced out. Throbbing at the base of my skull. I had the globulus thing in my throat. My jaw puffs up and down. I get lighning bolt pain in my face and chest. Its crazy

Then was in bed one night and I lost internal sensation in my head and chest. I could still feel touch but could not sense anything going on like my heart rate or body temperature this tripped me out badly. Sadly as time went on this has happened all over my head and body. I have tension all down my spine pain under my armpit and even my tummy and chest feel rigid and sore. I dont sleep properly infact if I fall asleep on my left I jolt awake. If I lay on my front my body twitches. I get flare ups where it feels like my whole body buzzes. I have tinnitus which haa gotten higher pitched as ive lost sensation

Ive been to chiropractors and osteopaths, been for massages and taken supplements and herbs. I cut out alcohol and caffeine and cigs. In january when it started.

The doctor thinks im nuts and stuck me on antidepressants which I had a massive reaction to . Went to a Neurologist who did an MRI brain scan which was clear. Multiple bloods which seemingly were all clear too. Ive had private vitamin tests, Lyme tests. I had a CT of my brain after I had a migraine so intense I thought I was dying. That was clear and lunbar puncture after which my body went absoulutely crazy. Ive been referred to ENT after numerous basal sorays failed to work.

I finally had a spine MRI whjlich shoeed bulges at c5 and c6 and also L5 S1 bulge. Spinal canal narrowing in the neck and loss of cervical curve.

At the start I had dizziness heart felt like it was struggling and neck ajd shoulder pain. While I was visiting firends I had a heay massage with a vibrating massager on my back after that I felt jarred mentally and in the enxt few days I was off work and symotoms worsened. I havent been back since.

I think it might be the loss of curve ib my spine. Text neck. I didnt realise how bad it was but now I can see esoecually as things have worsened im oretty much always pulled forwards and my neck is always stretched. Ive read a lot about thw pressure that ypur head exerts on your body when forwards and really think ive caused damage to myself with posture which has worsened until it started having an effect.

Im going to embark on some exercises to try and undo this damage. Im scared of physical therapy as my body is so sensitive to everything but hoping I can help myself undo this hell.

If anyone finds an answer please post. I will keep updating everyone too

I also have like a ridge or indention along crown of my head and wonder if this has something to do with it..I continue Goin 2 an Ent, cuz I have reflux and globus. Im sorry youre going through this madness too. No im no better I much believe im getting worse. The only things that has shown up in any test is low blood pressure and disk bulges in C5 &6 plus loss of neck curve.

Neuro thinks is psychological mainly and some form of migrane sensitivity. Im not so sure but how can you know! I cant feel my muscles and they are constantly tense even in my eyes which makes thing so sore all the time and its hard to hold myself up. Had some more bloods done for Rhuematoid conditions and clacium profile, C reactive protein and full blood count. I dont think anything will show up. Drinking lots of water seems to help a bit but not much.

Have you found anything that helps? If my head felt normal I could cooe with all this but the tightness and thr funny eyes and ears is too much sometimes and nothing seems to help those things. I have realised the more I do the worse I am so im trying to keep things limited but still exercise bu walking a little each day. I hope we get answers soon. Have you been tested for Lyme?

Hi terrie.  So I went to a TMJ specialist and I was skeptical but turns out I have really bad what is actually called TMD on my left side and a mild case of it on my right side.  They did a CT scan of my head and I could see just how close my left jaw bones were.  Doctor said it was more than likely pressing on a nerve in there that is causing my eyes to hurt and my left ear to feel full.  He said that all the muscles in your head will tense up when something is this off kilter in your face.  I had no idea TMD could cause all of this, but it can!  I've been twice now and gotten injections in my face/head.  Yesterday I got 2 injections in my temple, 2 in my jaw, 2 in my neck and 2 in back of my head.  Some of these were to help the nerve pain and some were to help the inflammation. This doctor does not believe in steroids, so the inflammatory drug was not a steroid (yay!!).  Last night was the first night in weeks the crown/back of my head wasn't hurting.  They also made me a custom mouthpiece to wear at night and day.  I apparently have one messed up jaw.  I really do feel better today.  The injection sites hurt some, but I'll take over all the odd pains these past few months.  I just googled and found this doctor.  Well, turns out he was the real deal.  And he said most general MD's do not understand TMD.  I actually was just about to call a neurologist, but I might not now. So if you haven't, it definitely worth getting checked out!  Good luck to you all!

Let me know how you get on I hope you get answers too. I've got to wait until January for my ENT appointment so i'm hoping that sheds some light. I've already had allergy tests and a nasal endoscopy and that showed inflamed turbines but no infection or allergic reaction. I'm thinking maybe Eustation tube dysfuction

I'll keep you posted with any developments

Hello.  I just wrote back to terrie with my findings of my diagnosed TMD.  This actually can cause some pretty bad stuff...  it has more than likely been causing most of my symptoms this year.  I have had terrible neck issue, head pain in the back of my head, temples and crown, face pain, ear pressure, hurts behind my eyes, and it goes on and on.  I've had two different MRI's this year, numerous x-rays...  into the summer my temples started hurting really bad.  Felt this tremendous pressure in my head.  It's been hell this year.

Funny, my symptoms started in late January.  I definitely understand and feel for you.  And on top of all of this I guess the chronic pain has triggered some anxiety attacks, because I've had a few of those, which of course feels almost like a heart attack.

This TMJ specialist I go to now said that TMJ or called TMD can cause neck, head, ear and eye issues.  Can make you have some vertigo, which I have had also.  After my CT scan of my face and he saw how out of whack of my left jaw was, he said it definitely could be causing most of my symptoms.  I got 8 injections yesterday and last night was the first time the crown of my head was hurting or the lower part of my head in the back.  I'm going to continue on with the TMJ treatments and hope I continue to improve.

And my doc said that most medical doctors do not know about TMD that well and cannot diagnose it.  The TMD doctor said he has someone come in almost every day that is diagnosed with it.  It apparently is fairly common and people just have no idea about it.

And I meant to say, after the injections, it was the first time the crown of my head has not hurt.

Oh jessica, what great news for you! As I'm sure now tht u know, the stress of it all can start calming as well helping you even more so..Iv never heard of TMD. so a dentist can't see that when Tha xray the teeth? Would she (dentist) be able to c if I even had it. Then maybe go to an TMD specialist. I just still wonder about the ridge in my skull..ugh...but..I will def jot dwn the info u shared, thank you, thank you, and see if I can find that kid of a specialist..I went to ENT today. He says all looks good. Wit acid. Tinnitis from high pitch hearing loss, sounds in head from my eustation (?) Tubes..I even had him xk out my crown ridge..lol..he said prob a lymphoma..that he wouldn't worry about it and I should stop lookin up stuff on the internet..I do need to stop..well again, so happy u got some answers..I pray u continue everyday to get better and better..keep us updated!!!

Well he said all looks good. Tha rechecked my hearing and he verified I do have mild hearing loss.thus the tinnitis. I told him bout ear pressure, and strange sounds. He said eustation tubes. For me to hold my nose closed and blow till Tha pop about 20 to 30 times daily and that will help that. I had him 2 ck knot on crown of my head, he said prob a lymphoma that he wouldn't worry. That I shouldn't look up symptoms. He said many patients wud come in freaking ovr something minor that Tha read online..I'm not doing tht anymore..so..Guess I got to live with the T. Probably the strange nouses. I 4got to mention to him bout my temtees and eye aches. I will mention to my reg dr when I go. Jessica told me about TMD. SO probably going to ck tht out too..hope all goes good with ya..hoping and praying we get to the root of all these symptoms..keep in touch!!!

Hi Jess are you based in the UK or elsewhere? Where did you find your TMD specialist? I'm so glad you've found some relief and I hope you continue to improve! x

Hi terrie...  here is what TMD/TMJ is basically https://www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/temporomandibular-disorders-tmd#1 So my jaw pops some, but it has never really bothered me.  The doctor believes all the neck issues I've had have been because of this.  I probably would have never went to the doctor if it hadn't of been for the neck issues and headaches and my ears feeling very full.  If you find a doctor who specializes in TMD, make sure they take a CT scan of your face.  That is the only way to tell for sure if it's the jaw/temporal bones that are not right.  When I got the papers listing my issues, it actually said I had arthritis in that joint.  It can cause all kinds of issues like the tinnitus, ear pressure, headaches all over the head, stiffness and achy neck.  I even had what felt like something stuck in my throat earlier this year.  It's been a rollercoaster of symptoms.  And I never would have thought TMD could cause this.  There are other sites about TMD that list even more symptoms that the site above.

And to mention, I have a very odd shaped head and never really paid much attention to it.  But where crown of my head is, it indents really drastically there.  And since all of these issues, I have noticed it more, but I think it's always been that much of a indent.  It almost feels like I have lumps, but it's really just the indention making it feel that way.  I psyched myself out several times thinking, omg, my head is indenting more.  After the injection in the back of my head, and the pain subsided, I haven't paid near as much attention to it.

I replied to terrie, but it said the reply is waiting to be moderated??  Is that because I inserted a link??

Anyways, I am from the US.  I live in Arkansas.  The TMD specialist I found was in Little Rock.  I just googled TMJ specialist near me and him and one other popped up for all of AR.  Fortunately I didn't need a referral.  The regular doctors would have never known it was TMJ.  A dentist might would though.  They can probably do a x-ray and see it well enough.  I knew my jaw popped some, so I thought it was worth a visit.  I was shocked to learn how out of whack my jaw/temporal bones really were. And relieved that something was finally found after the endless doctor visits, x-rays, mri's, etc.  I still don't feel great, but I'm going to give the mouthpieces along with the injections some time.  Good luck to you!  And if you pursue this route, I would skip the dentist and try and locate a TMJ/TMD specialist.  Save some time if it really is this.  I was told that not all dentist could diagnose it correctly.

Terrie, I replied to you under your other post, but it's not going thru, I guess because I put a link to a TMD site.  A dentist should be able to diagnose TMD, but not all.  If you pursue TMD, I would google and find a specialist.  The only sure way to know, is if a CT scan is done of your face.  Good luck to you and hopefully my other post will come thru soon.

Oh. Okay. I will certainly ck it out. I am in the states as well..well hoping that the shots etc you are doing fixes yr issues.

Question, I ache in my eyes as well. Does yours ache occasionally or every few days? Ent said I did have pressure in my left ear, all where everything seems to be stemming. My head has occasional pains that shoot thru in different areas as well. I just went to dentist and had xrays a month ago. Seems they would have seen something..I'm just to the point I just dnt want to keep going from Dr to dr..gets old doesn't it? Well please keep us updated..maybe yr last message comes thru. Sometimes Tha won't allow certain things. Crazy right? Take care!

Yes, it's more like right behind my eyes I guess...  That has been more prominent here lately.  The TMD doc said that the nerve that the jaw/temporal bone is pressing on is affecting my ear and eyes.  He said that is one of the major complaints of TMD sufferers is ear pressure, tinnitus and eye pain.  I don't guess my other post if ever going to go thru.  Go and just google TMD and you can see what it stands for and other facts about it.  It's a disorder that affects the joint that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull.

And yes a dentist should catch any bad TMD disorders, but not all will.  Some don't know what to look for is what I was told at least.  Sounds like you have several symptoms that point to TMD.  You need to find a doctor/dentist that will do an evaluation like mine did.  On my first visit they did a CT scan right away to identify the issue.  The CT will tell the tale if there's any TMD issues going on.  I got fortunate and happened upon a good doctor who really understood TMD.  And as I've learned this year, this is rare!

Oh wow. Yes you are fortunate..oh man, that does sound like me for sure. That cud even be why my jaw crackles sometimes when I move it..yep, I Googled it earlier..going to talk to my dentist..thank you. Oh I hope and pray that is the answer to my ear and eye pressure and tinnitis too..

Good question and that is what I asked this week when I was there.  So the nurse that was helping out had TMD and she said she was having bad headaches and such and for her she noticed a difference in the first month of injections and wearing the night mouthpieces and daytime mouthpiece. I can tell you after the injections, that odd pain in the back of my head has calmed down and the odd pain in my temples too.  My ear doesn't feel like it's going to pop any more either.  So either it's a coincidence or the anti-inflammatory injections plus the one for my nerve is really helping. They also hooked my neck and face up to the electro nodes that gently stimulate the muscles.  That probably helped too.  This doctor is a full on treatment doc.  It was expensive, but I didn't even care.  I'm like, 'let's start now!'. Thank goodness for care credit!

I do believe I'm feeling better.  Less aches in my head.  I only have the top part of my mouthpiece but the doc said wear it as much as I can.  And I have been.  I'll get the bottom piece next week.  I'm not sure how long the injections last I have gotten.  I'm going to ask that next week.  But yes, overall I am better.  I talked to several folks I know this past weekend and told them about my TMD and they said they had very similar symptoms.  Crazy how many people sounds like they have TMD issues.
