Leg length discrepancy following hip replacement
Posted , 6 users are following.
I had an anterior hip replacement 6 months ago. That leg was 2 1/2" longer following surgery and is still 1 1/2" longer, causing considerable back pain. I have been sleeping in a recliner for 4 months and have to use a walker. This surgery has turned me into an old lady. No more golfing, etc. I am frustrated and depressed.

How terrible! I have never heard of a leg length discrepandy as large as 2 1/2 inches before. Hopefully you have talked with your original surgeon about this. What has he said? If it were me, I'd go for a second opinion to another orthopedic surgeon in a different practice from your original surgery for an evaluation.

warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum ...
I agree with Annie - that is a big difference - and that following surgery ... how big was the difference between legs before surgery if any ?
It does not sound right and definitely have a second opinion, like Annie said ...
when was the last time you had an appointment with your surgeon and what did he say about the LLD? was it measured by surgeon?
there will be a difference in leg length but this is too much - 6 months post-op and still 1 1/2 inch ?

Thank you Annie and Renee for the warm welcome. This was done at Mayo Rochester. Just this week I returned and saw a different surgeon and had x-rays, MRI's and the Scanogram (specifically for leg length discrepency). I go back next week for one more MRI.
Even after looking on the Internet regarding this subject, it's kind of a grey area. There are so many different ways to measure the discrepency. When I stand on my short leg, I measure about 5'4". When standing on my long leg, I measure 5'6" And when I stand on my long leg, my heel is 1 1/2" off the floor.
I hope they can help me. I honestly can't live like this.

how about your other hip?
can you get some kind of shoe insert to compensate for the difference?

Did not have length discrepancy before surgery. I need the other hip replaced but I'm terrified to have it done. I'm not willing to have my shoes built up 1 1/2". I want them to fix it. I still have one more MRI next week and then they will tell me what they will do.

Do not let the first careless surgery put you off having the other hip done if it's necessary but pick a surgeon who is more experienced and competent. They will be in a position to correct for the previous incorrect leg lengths.
Unfortunately until this is done the difference will be throwing out your back which will lead to back pain and pains elsewhere potentially.
In the UK one can find out how many surgeries and of what type and levels of success.
Good luck Richard

Unfortunately, my first knee replacement (I've had 3) was also botched. So 2 of my 4 replacements have had bad results. And when I had the anterior hip replacement 6 months ago, they also damaged that knee (the one I've had replaced twice). I couldn't put any weight on it for 2 months. I watched a YouTube video of an anterior replacement. They really twist, pull, manipulate the leg. They even pull it back so far that they pop the hip out of joint. I had a surgeon from Mayo Clinic with experience.

This is just so awful and unacceptable in this day and age. How on earth can they manage too damage your knee when doing your hip dear gods!
I also watched a YouTube video of an anterior replacement being done but this was using a special table to control the height of the patient's leg and it was all done with a minimum of yanking about.
A lot of care was taken all through the procedure and the patient was shown walking the day of the surgery I think.
If I can find the link to the video I will post it

First to make it necessary for someone to have to respond in writing this giving a paper trail so that you have something to support whatever you need to solve your problems.
Then the procedure needs to be looked at so others get a better outcome.
Best of luck
Richard

I had my THR in 2014 and every time I went for follow up I complained about the pain in my thigh. I was told by the surgeon just need to stretch that muscle.
Now after much pain and leg locking up I found out the problem is it is 1 & 5-8
