Hi , you can't really compare yourself to other people , this forum has shown me that . It all depends what state you were in before op , your age and how fit you are .

i could lift my leg up when laying down but couldn't move my leg sideways . Kept up exercises and can do that now . Still have pain when laying on side and lifting leg up .

Physio said its because my thigh muscles are so weak . Seeing him again next week .

am not limping this week so hopefully improving . Am 60 and 11 weeks post op this week .

Greetings, That is the question I had because my THR was anterior.means down the front of the thigh. I couldn't lift my leg up even to get into the car or the bed. I used a tool called leg lifter.

I'm doing my fourth physical therapy. This time water tread mill.

I'm now 11 months post op. I can now lift it into the car and bed.and can lift it over the leg.

I have damage to my muscle And nerve damage.

You will do much better than I did.

It was nice to have others who had the same problem. So I wouldn't feel so alone and suffering.best of luck to u

    Hello fellow hippy

Any movement was difficult due to the weight caused by swelling. Was shown how to use dressing gown cord to move it. Think I was able to move it independently on day 8 as fluid had dispersed and of course the exercises help. On day 18 now and no pain killers for 3 days. Sleeping still disturbed as it is not natural for me to sleep on back. I catch up in day

I think it was about 21 days before I could lift my leg with a straight knee.  I put a plastic bag under my foot to enable me to slide it sideways a bit and to slide it up to my other knee.  I am now nearly 18 weeks post op and can lift my leg sideways in a standing position quite easily and also can lift it up when lying down.  I was quite fit beforehand though.  Just go at your own pace, don't stress about it as we are all different.  Good luck.

Was  I was able to lift my leg a little bit, ie a few inches, two days after my op, just before I was discharged. Now at 5 weeks it's no problem whatsoever and has got easier day by day. Don't judge yourself on what others can do though. You can get very low by thinking you aren't doing as we'll as you think you should be. You could potentially push yourself too hard thinking like that.

Just do what you feel comfortable with then let us know and we can cheer you on.

    Good luck in your recovery.
