I suggest you ask your GP. moveable lumps are not something I have ever heard of in 8 years of PMR and GCA and on three forums dealing with PMR and/or GCA.

One should never, ever put everything down to PMR or Pred.  Just ask yourself what you would have done with having PMR?

Pauline, it could be a Baker's cyst.  They're often found in people with RA or arthritis, and anyone with immune problems.   If it's swollen, an ice-pack can help.  But do get it checked out by your GP.  As for new pains popping up in different places, I put mine down to anno domini!

Hi Pauline, I have just been diagnosed with a Baker's cyst. Do go to your doctor and he will send you for a scan to be sure. Mine does not move. sometimes it's painful sometimes it isn't. It isn't anything to do with PMR. In fact my doctor thought I had a blood clot as the symptoms are similar. Do you also get a pain in the calf? My doc sent me for a DVT scan which ruled out the clot but did find the cyst.

I had a Bakers Cyst pre diagnosis. It disappeared, I presumed because of the steroids. It wasn't so much painful as a nuisance because I couldn't flex my knee properly. It was sometimes the size of between a golf ball and a tennis ball!

Sounds like a Bakers Cyst to me. I had one. I think it triggered my PMR, when it ruptured. I never had any other issues prior to the cyst. I was rowing for 3 hours (in a rowboat) and got off the boat and had the cyst. It was a function of bone rubbing on bone and a result of having had the meniscus removed years earlier when I tore it playing racquet ball.

When the cyst ruptured, my calf swelled up, I had to have a doppler scan done to rule out a blood clot (negative). I then had to wear an elastic stocking (which I was unable to put on myself, due to the sudden ACUTE PMR symptoms I developed. My husband helped me put it on and I also took all kinds of NSAIDS: Naproxen, Aspirin, Ibuprofen: I took them all and they gave me a bleeding stomach and anemia.

What helped the cyst was a Steroid injection into the joint.

And by the way, the Bakers Cyst can come back over and over again. If it causes problems, get another steroid shot.

Several months later, the PMR was diagnosed and I started 20 mg Prednisone: no PMR pain. The cyst comes and goes, but no problems with it. Now on 5 mg- 20 months later still OK, just fatigue.

Good luck!! A good orthopedist should be able to diagnose the Bakers Cyst.

    Thank God for Steroids.

My PMR needed 20 mg Prednosone
