Leg pain

Hi.   I'm getting a lot of pain in my leg on the operated side.  Knee, ankle thigh and calf.   I'm now 4 weeks post op it gets worse with walking which I am doing but not pushing it.     Is this normal and has anyone else had this.   I walk with one stick when I'm out and about can walk without any sticks at home.  I see my consultant in about 3 weeks.

    Dear Amanda

I'm sorry to hear that you are in a lot of lain...not good.

I don't have an answer for you but these are my thoughts. Your having pain down onw side would make me want to eliminate a back issue and then go from there. I've found over many years hat if your back is out in any way this can result in pain in another part of ones body.

I would book a consultation with a good chiropractor, not a McTimoney one. Even if your back turns out to be fine it is not a wasted visit because at a stroke you have eliminated a major potential area and can then look elsewhere.

Still thinking back issues I would go back to using both crutches, sticks or walking poles to help you to walk in a balanced way.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Cheers Richard

Strange you should comment Richard on going back to two crutches. I am three and a half weeks post op and I found I had pain down my leg on my operated side, I had gone to one crutch a few days before and found going back to two did the trick.

      Dear Cindy

Good to hear that I was on the right track and that you are seeing an improvement.

Establishing a balanced body is often the key to eliminating pain elsewhere.

      Good luck

    dear amanda,

Oh dear ... I am afraid that you are a wee bit going too fast -

I know you are eager to go back to walking with the dogs etc. -

I agree with previous responses that you might have to use 2 crutches for a couple of weeks longer  - at least outside -

I did not have crutches but a 4 wheeled walker, rollator, which made it easier for me to get around - also inside the house ... I live alone so this was very practical as it has a little bench where I can put my cup of coffee and other stuff -

While recovering from this surgery and starting to walk etc. all kind of muscles are waking up, so to speak and making their presence known -

Doing their best to get and keep you balanced is a major task while there is still so much healing taking place -

What are the pains like ? is it more stiffness or soreness, or shooting pains ..

Are you still taking pain medication?

Let us know okay - it is normal at this stage in recovery -

    big warm hug

    renee

oh, that does not sound too good -

the other thing that might cause seep aches and swelling in the hip is that bone, a living tissue, continues to re-model and adapt around the metal implants. This increased metabolic activity can lead to lingering soreness and swelling after  activity (like walking) -

If you are really worried and in pain, make an appointment with your surgeon and see him as soon as possible - No need to wait another 3 weeks -

Let us know how you are getting on, okay

Hi Amanda, I think I'm similar to you at the moment, re pain and the timescale of your operation and mine.....  my LTHR was done 4 weeks past this last Thursday, I've been doing great until a few days ago.  I was walking a lot, and  each week that passed had less pain and less swelling less or hardly any painkillers and thought I was doing well.  However this last few days I've been very sore around the area where my replacement would be and like you on the operated side, and weirdly I feel aware of where they put  the hip replacement, or I think it's that, tbh I'm not sure.

.  I've been following all the rules, apart from In the middle of this week I've started to sleep occasionally on my operated side. I tried it before but it was too sore, but now I've woken up a few times on that side, I don't think I'm breaking any rules as it's my operated side am lying on however now I'm concerned I've done something as it's since then I'm feeling sore.  I was told to use two crutches till I see my consultant in three weeks and I have to confess around the house I've been using one, so I'm wondering now after reading Renee's reply to you if I'm pushing myself too far.

Also like you I'm getting pain in my ankle and calf.  Ive read on this forum  that many have a setback during their recovery so maybe it's just that , it is concerning though, as I'm panicking a bit about dislocation or if I've dislodged something .  I've cut back on my walking this past few days so hoping it eases off, I hope you get some relief and feel better soon, just though I'd comment as we are both roughly at the same stage .... take care Lizbet 😁
