Levothyroxine - Side Effects

Posted , 4 users are following.

I was diagnosed with under active thyroid about a year ago, and have been slowly increaing my levels of levothyrine. I am currently on 125mgs. Ever since i have been on a higher dose, i have had terrible pain in between my shoulder blade, and feel pain when breathing deeply.

I stopped taking it for a couple of weeks to see if the symptoms subsided, which they did, but other symptoms of underactive thyroid obviously appear. I am back up to my 125mg dose but the constant pain is so uncomfortbale and makes me miserable.

I mentioned it to my Dr who said there is no other option? Has anyone else had these problems? If so, any luck in how to solve them?

Thanks!

I've read a lot of posts about this same medication because I also take it. Many here would ask what kind of Dr told you no other option? If not a specialist, endocronologist etc, you may be able to find other options by seeing a specialist. best wishes.

Ok, so this might be a really long shot but I'm only mentioning this because I had the same kind of pain as you describe. I am on 125mcg Levo as well, (four years and counting) and had pain when breathing deeply, and it was down to newly developed food intolerances. This was causing trapped wind due to not being digested properly. I can't eat dairy or eggs now due to nausea, and the old comfort food favourite of a bacon roll had to go as well. Like I said, it sounds a long shot but try looking at what you eat and perhaps change some things in your diet. Even if they don't work after a while, at least you can go back to your doctor knowing you tried to help yourself. Doctors train for 7 years and get paid a LOT of money, so I think he/she can do better than say "there are no other options". Make them earn it, because nobody should have to deal with eevryday pain on top of other health issues.  Best of luck. smile

A lot of people with hypothyroidism  seem to have  gastric issues.    the problem seems to be that we make less stomach acid  so we get problems like wind, burping and acid refux as well as problems digesting food and not being able to fight off bugs.      Suggest you look up symptoms of  Hypochlorhydria. And what you can do about it.....   You definitely shouldnt have to give up stuff like bacon sandwiches.

Well, thank you for that! I read up on those symptoms (had no idea of Hypochlorhydria) and it certainly answered a lot of questions I had - not only for the "wind" issue, but also the vitamin absorbtion, gait difficulties (I can walk but not always in a straight line, haha!) and limb pain. Gosh I really wish doctors/consultants would be more informed, but its nice that we have forums like this so we can help each other. :D

My poor husvand was being given tons of antacids and proton pump inhibitors and was in a terrible state.      I got him some betaine hcl with pepsin (... Its not a prescription med). And  he took one when he felt rough after eating.....   We had a pint of milk on standby in case he exploded or his stomach melted, or alien appeared!     But he was fine.  Absolutely fine.   And has been taking them whenever he needs them.  ( not so much these days). For the past 10 years.      He doubles up when he us abroad and it keeps all the dodgy tummy stuff away.

      xx
