Lexapro/cipralex....not sure what to do

I was on 20mg lexapro for major depression and weaned off in September 2017. November end, two months after being off, onset of anxiety and minor depression hit literally overnight which apparently is hormonal so i jumped back on 10mg  lexapro for a little over 6 weeks now mostly And 4 days at 12.5mg. I am super sensitive to meds and jumping on 10mg was so brutal at times. now I feel flat most of the day. Not really depressed but just unmotivated, scared, no joy, no excitement. I typically feel better in the evening. I wanted to keep the dosage low because it wasn’t as severe as my last episode and they also gave me hrt to add this time. I am at 6 weeks and still not back to normal and wonder if maybe lexapro isn’t working this time. Is 6 weeks too soon? I will see doc soon but wondering what people with experience would do. I hate this flat feeling and want to be happy again.  Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Erin, I am in week 5 in total on lexapro ( 10 days on 10 mg, the rest on 20 mg) I am still struggling. Although I had a good 2 days at the end of the 4th week and I thought I am getting better, all the fifth week I felt really bad again. I hope you are doing well Erin

Hi Shery, I have been on 20 mg for 2 weeks and then 25mg for 5 days. My doc told me to increase it because it is like having anemia and taking iron, if you take smaller doses you will get there slowly so she told me to bump up to 30mg but I told her 25mg is worth a shot. And then I will jump back down to 20mg. I noticed that I felt worse before my period and during and feel better after. Mine is all hormonal related. I can't wait to feel 100% again. Keep in mind we will have good days and bad days until we level out which can take a couple of months or more. You may want to ask about increasing your dose until you get there.

Erin and Everyone else...I've been on 7.5 mg for 6 weeks now .started out on 2.5 and have gotten up to 7.5.. I've had to go slow for my body does not tolerated large amounts at a time..the only thing that's going on now is a small amount of aniexty of the am.. The racing heart and limp legs when u get up and move some but it fades after I take my meds of am.. The rapid heart rate and shakiness I've always had from time to time.. I think is somewhat hormone related..my Dr. Says to just bump up when I feel like I can.. I just don't know if 7.5 will eventually be enough after time.. Does any of u pros have any ideals. If I increase will I have and side effects like I did in the beginning.... Take Care and Keep Posting.. God Bless 😊

I was soooooo frightened of increasing but so glad I did. I had a little more anxiety but not bad and a little more depression for a couple of days but it seems to be helping. It’s the initial start up on 10mg that was horrible and scared me.  But I think after being on it for a couple of months your body can tolerate increases much easier.  If your doctor is okay with it, increase it! I went up to 25mg to get better faster because I want my life back. Seems to be working smile this morning has been one of the best since December.  Don’t be frightened as the increase wasn’t bad at all. Hugs to you!

And after realizing the increase wasn’t bad, I wish I would have done the increase a couple of months ago but was too scared. I would probably be completely normal by now. I write in my journal and take notes so I know what to do if there is a next time.

Forgot to mention that I had some nausea but ginger candy and mint tea really helped. Maybe try 10mg as that is the minimum therapeutic dose.

I have a friend on 30mg and some people are on 40mg. I asked my doctor what if I take 25 but only need 20mg, what would happen. She said nothing will happen  just get happier  faster.  You are on such a low dose that the only thing can happen is you get closer to where you need to be. Don’t be scared! I wish I would have done this sooner! I am out in the sun eating bagels and feeling pretty good!

Btw, when I increased I was so scared waiting for side effects and they never really happened other than mostly nausea. I think the little anxiety and depression was from my menses. I am med sensitive and went from 12.5 to 20 to 25 within 2 weeks.

Good luck and keep us posted! I think you will be surprised that it isn’t hard to increase your dosage especially at a small amount. You may not have any side effects at all. Hugs and god bless!

Hello Erin... How r u doing..?

I am doing great! Knock on wood. Yesterday was the first day I did not wake up with any depression. Increasing was scary at first and I sat around waiting for something bad to happen but it never did, I started getting better in a couple of days (then caught the flu and felt like poo)  but I really didn’t have any side effects. And i am med sensitive. I went from 12.5 to 20 to 25mg and I am so much better.  How are you?

I did  some mild nausea for about a week after increasing but it subsided. But no more anxiety depression so it’s worth it!

Erin... That is Great to hear.. I'm now on 10mg. And as u know I take the meds spac d out in 2.5 mg. for the sole reason that I'm sensitive to meds.. Well I've had some choking issues.. A little aniexty and weakness in the am .. And as u say a little nausea durning the day which is new .. Did not have that until the increase to 10 mg. but all seems to b getting better.. I'm like u if my mouth says anything good about how I feel it normally jinks it.. But that is just our brains playing tricks on us..I have a question for you .. I'm going to wait till I have 2 weeks of 10 mg. of meds in me then I'm going to start taking 5mg at a time once of am and once in pm... Where I have been taking 2.5 mg. at 6 am ..noon ..6 pm.. And around 11pm .. With that said do u think I'll have any symptoms with going from 4 X a day to 2 times a day but taking same Mg... My Dr. Says there should not b but idk...again Soo glad u r doing better.. Stay in touch .. 💞 & 😇 Sent your way...

No, you shouldn’t have any issues especially since it is leveled out in you already. I take mine at night before bed. If you are still not where you need to be and your doctor is okay with you increasing, you should go to 15 or 20mg because it was a world of a difference and the nausea side effect was minimal. I truly believe when we are in the thick of it, our brains are being deceptive and telling us we will feel awful and then we believe it. It is a terrible thing! Like a self fulfilling prophecy. But know that you will get better and don’t listen to your mind playing tricks on you saying side effects willl be awful, because they aren’t. Especially since you have been on it so long, it has adapted to your chemistry.  Big hugs!!! Keep in touch!
