Lichen planus and LDN

i am writing for my husband who has oral and dermal lichen planus. I am a pharmacist and have researched treatments for his condition s and he has seen a rheumatologist who understands the disease state.  He has been on steroids in the past and a mouth wash.  The mouth was worked wonderfully and is a combination of clonetasol o.5% in Nystatin Suspension.  I found a study in Spain where this was used and convinced the doctor to give it a try.  Once my husband was we and off prednisone, many of his issues returned.  I have researched the use of low dose naltrexone for his disease and wonder if any other lichen planus patients have tried it.  Also. A naltrexone cream 1% might be useful for the itching.  Constant itching seems to be his issue right now, with and without lesions on the skin.  Antihistamines don't work well to control the itching.  As of today he is experiencing some lesions.  We see the doctor Monday and are hoping some other treatment will be offered.

Hi Janey , i am using LDN at present to help control my OLP, it isnt up to the present a major cure for me but it does help as it reduced the flares intensity and it has helped me also with my attitude to the OLP, i have OLP for about 5 yrs i have been using many differing meds including Steroids and you are correct about Steroids as when i finish a course my OLP returned with vengence. Now i Started taking 1ml for 2weeks then 2ml for 2 weeks then 3.5 for 2 weeks and now 4.5 ml this dose continues for good, so as for now i would have to say it is helping me and ithink the 4.5 ml dose is helping me more, i cant increase the dose as it dosent remain low dose then. Try it as helps some people in a major way..keep trying we will win ....

Thanks for the information Patrick,!  Oral and dermal lichen planus is a very misunderstood autoimmune disease.  Dermatologist do,not know how to treat it, so that's why we needed up seeing a Rheumatologist, who at least has experience with autoimmune disorders.  I have know about LDN for some time as my pharmacy already compounds it for patients with Crohn's disease and MS.   We are seeing our GP on Monday and I am arming myself with lots of information about LDN.  Hopefully he will be willing to prescribe LDN as the rheumatologist would not even consider it.

The rheumotologist will prescribe only conventional medicine and apparently has no knowledge of LDN.   I was at least able to get the GP to prescribe the Clobetasol 0.5% in Nystatin for my husbands mouth sores.

Because there is such good buccal absorption of the Clobetasol in the mouth, it did clear  skin issues as well.  May I ask who prescribed the LDN    for you?

Thanks for the info Patrick!  Oral and dermal lichen planus is a very misunderstood autoimmune disease.  I have know about LDN for some time as my pharmacy compounds it for  have Chrons disease and MS.  I an encouraged that you have had good results taking the LDN.  I will be able to take that information to our local doctor and hopefully he will prescribe it.  I did present information about LDN to the rheumatologist, but he was unwilling to prescribe it, basically because he doesn't have knowledge about its use with autoimmune diseases.

Hello there, I also have Crohn's and have struggled with OLP for about two years.  I don't even know if I've been going to the right specialists.  At the suggestion fo my FP, I've gone to a dematologist and two ENT's. They haven't given me any help whatsoever, and It's only getting worse.  Am I knocking on the wrong doors?  Should I go to a rheumatologist?  I am so frustrated and am emotionally spent. Thank you in advance for anything you can say to steer me in the right directions.

I am a pharmacist as well.  My little boy who is 12 has oral lichen planus.  The holistic dr thinks low dose naltrexone should be tried.  Any luck on your end?
