Lichen Sclerosis

Hi I have had LS for about 6 years now and have used steroid creams to help but I try not to use them too much as I worry that they will do more harm than good. I have been using coconut oil to help with the daily itching but it's getting really bad. I have just discovered that artificial sweeteners may be causing the flare up as I just switched to diet drinks. Did any one else have this problem? It's really getting me down the flare ups are daily and are causing a lot of discomfort.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sure did - I have cut out sweeteners. I use stevia organic and tried to cut down on sugars. I used clobetesol for nearly 5 years. Once I changed my diet and trialled a few different spritzes and ointments I've had huge success. If I feel an itch coming on I use paw paw ointment. Every morning I cut a vitamen E capsule (after shower) and spread liberally. As happy as you can be with this condition but I found if I keep on to it I'm going ok 😊

Hi what does the vitamin E do ? Which brand do you buy please?

you can slather it on your skin or swallow it in a capsule. Praised as an antioxidant, vitamin E also helps your body in a number of other ways, such as helping your immune system and helping keep vessels healthy. I don't buy any particular one as it's very expensive so I buy it at chemist warehouse. Good luck 😊

Please don't stop using clobetasol. LS causes skin thickening which the clob can help with. It is recommended to spend 90 seconds rubbing in the clob to get the best benefit from it.

If you can find a link (on the Patient website) to Dr Goldsteins lecture it is well worth watching, it is very informative.

Yes I agree, do keep on using the steroid ointment (Dermovate) as maintenance.  I had not been using it for some years as I had no flare ups for some time, but I eventually found that I was still changing shape  - clitoris almost disappeared under the hood and some fusing of the labia. So the LS is silently still there, it does not go away. The wonderful specialist nurse at the vulva clinic said I should keep up maintenance applying twice a week - which I'm now doing and just hope no more of me fuses.

And yes, do look at Dr Goldsteins lecture - was so encouraging to know people do know about LS now.

I agree completely.  I appreciate the benefits of borax and soda rinses in easing the misery of day to day LS and flare ups, but Clobetasol inhibits the long term destructive action of LS.  When LS hits really hard, I return to my gyno' prescribed Clobetasol routine of a pea sized amount rubbed in twice per week until I can coast with borax rinses and coconut oil moisturizer daily.  Five years now and good reports.  See a vulval specialist annually.  Wishing you all the best!

I do believe that has something to do with it. I have accepted water my drink of choice now! I haven't had soda in almost 2 years. I have made the mistake of thinking I was ok with some sugar as I have been doing so well. Well I have been kicking myself ever since because I am suffering horribly. My flare up started on Sunday and I am dying. I cannot take this anymore. I have started using Clob every night again and paying close attention to what is going into my mouth. This is not the first time I have done this....when will I learn?!?!? smile

Stop drinking chemical drinks sugar-free drink water better for you and switch to castor oil for any itching

Have you been on this site very long?  If so, you may have read about baking soda baths (1/3 cup in a bathtub).  It took my itching away almost immediately.  Also, please read the thread, An Experiment with Borax.  Sodium borate (Borax) is a natural remedy, and has been such a blessing.  I and others have found healing without the use of steroids.

One last thing, I personally would not encourage you to watch that video, by Drs Goldstein & Runels. I watched it right after I was diagnosed and it scared the heck out of me. It shows the worst possible photos, plus they are working on a procedure that they will eventually market, and need volunteers. Clearly they don't know about the natural remedies we've discovered here. I'm bringing this up because when I was at my wit's end, Alistar came forward with her Borax treatment and it's changed my life.  I just thought you should know about another option.

Thank you I discovered the baking soda wash yesterday and tried it. I was amazed the relief I got. So glad I came onto this sight. I will have a look at the Borax.

      Thanks

Wonderful!  So glad you found relief.  New people are coming on this site all the time, full of fear and shock over their diagnosis, so it's good for them to read about sucesses.

Just wanted to update you all. I took bits of advice from all of you and the difference it has made is incredible. I stopped all artificial sweetners and fizzy juice I have tried to cut sugar out of my diet completely but that's not been so easy. I started bathing with the bicarbonate of soda and I am completely pain and irritation free. I can't believe the difference and it's only been 5 days. Thank you so much everyone for your advice.
