life after the Airboot

Hi ,

Week 7 of my airboot and heel lifts. Does anyone know once the heel lifts are all gone how long do you still keep your airboot on? Getting pretty tired of wearing it now.

    Hi Karen

I had just removed my cast today and started walking again, but its not easy at all, your calf get so so week because of the cast or boot, that forst week plus you have to walk with the help of crutch on your left hand, so you dont collapse.

Secondly, you must do excierses to make your whole injured side leg stron as before, especially calf and the Tendon achilles.

    NHS is CRAP!!!!! Honestly!!

      Hi Imran,

slowly slowly. I am sure your walking will come along. I seemed to have come to a stand still then all of a sudden I was able to use one crutch and have been walking in my boot without any crutches. I have been doing my own exercises twice a day just on my food but will start to do some leg exercises now too. Also went back to work today and all OK as I have a desk job mainly.

P.S let me know how you get on this week

I used a boot without heel lifts for only about four days.  I'm not sure my surgeon knew what he was doing with my after care.  Sorry I don't have a straight answer.

After the 4th heel lift was taken out I had to wear the boot full time for a further two weeks, after which I only had to wear it when going outdoors.  Three weeks later I stopped wearing the boot altogether.

Great thanks for responding. I did think as much just so desperate to get this thing off and go on holiday but my doc said I can't fly with the boot on. I read somewhere today when you come out if your boot to put one of the heel lifts in your shoe for a few weeks just wondering if this will prevent a limp due to weekender leg.

After I came out of my boot, I didn't use any heel lifts at all, my physiotherapist said that I would not need to.  I found my ordinary shoes a little bit uncomfortable as they were a bit too rigid and stiff, so I went to my local sports shop, explained to them what had happened and asked for something that would be comfortable to walk and cycle in.  They recommended some running shoes, which turned out to be brilliant.  They were very comfortable to walk in.  You're well over half way in the boot and the worst is behind you; it won't be too long before you're out of it and mobile again.

I know I can't wait until me t week when go back to hospital it will be 9.5 weeks since injury. Expecting to be in boot for a few weeks flat footed as you mentioned so now hoping road to recovery and light getting bigger at end of tunnel in relation to this boot! I have my running shoes ready and waiting and have already started my home exercises to aid in the recovery physio appointment not for another 2 weeks yet.

Hi Karen - great that you are nearly done with the boot! I have been told to wear the boot 10 weeks and the last 4 weeks will be flat (no incline/ lift). However also told to start weight-bearing after 2 weeks!

Yes I was told pretty much I could weight bear straight away but not been told past my appointment at end of July hoping for a few weeks without any lifts and sell the boot on eBay? I am sure I will get some takers there seems to be so many people this has happened to. Found out yesterday my client did the same thing, nice to know I'm not the only one out there. How far are you down this rocky road?

It's crazy... I never really knew about this injury before, but there do seem to be quite a lot of people with the same thing. I might do the same thing and sell this boot when I'm done, they are fairly expensive.

I'm only 4 weeks post-surgery... So still a way off to go!

Yeah I was told it cost £120 just need to find an unlucky sole who is size 5 and right footed! Lol. Good luck with your recovery this sight is good as nice to be able to talk to people whilst you slowly go stir crazy. I'm back at work so at least looking at four different walls!
