Lifetime congested ears, help please.

So I'm doing a little bit of research because my ENT appointment is a few months away. When I was younger I was told by an allergist that I'm highly allergic to house dust mite so I breathe through my mouth 95% of the time. A few years ago, an audiologist and I did the hearing test and she said that I don't have any hearing problems but she also said that my ears are congested because I had failed the other test, which I don't remember the name of. She said that she was going to ask my GP to refer me to an ENT but I didn't receive any letters about it so I recently went to the GP and asked for it but it will take a few months before an ENT sees me. My problems is that when people speak to me from a close range, like from 3/4 meters away, I can hear them just fine but I struggle to understand them, even if they speak up, when I'm like 10/15 meters away from people but when I get closer to them, I don't have any problems hearing and understanding them. Could this be related to the fact that I am highly allergic to house dust mite?
