Ligaments (I think) keep popping out of my knee and my knee locks until I push them back in. What is this?

Today as I was getting into my car I felt a massive pop in my knee and suddenly couldn't bend it. A large lump had appeared about 2cm inwards from my knee cap. After 10 or so minutes I tried to bend my knee and pushed the lump towards my kneecap. Whatever it was (ligament etc) went back into place and my knee was back to normal. The only problem now is that it keeps popping out while I'm walking and my knee feels a bit unstable. I have attached two pictures, one shows the lump, the other shows my knee after I've pushed it back in. Any ideas on what this could be?

Carlyau, I hope u r well and have recuperated. You are describing the knee problem I am having and I am curious how your surgery went, how long u were in rehab, were u out of work, and if you are 100% after 10 months. Would you recommend the surgery or something else? I have been doing a boot camp where I did deep knee squats and broad jumping. That seems to have been what caused my problem. I didn't know it untill the next day as I didn't have any pain. Since then if my leg is in a certain position, I get the bulge u describe and it locks up. I have to stop, straighten my leg, bend it back, then push the bump back in. Totally weird. Would love to hear the rest of your story. Thanks.
