Limping a lot after hip revision

Posted , 16 users are following.

I'm 6 weeks post a right hip revision, the right hip THR lasted 12 years. I'm 53 years old, but when walking without a crutch I'm limping badly and have pain in the hip. With a single crutch I'm walking very well, with no pain.

Am I expecting too much at the moment?

From what I've read, it takes longer to recover from a revision than from the initial THR. If I were you, I'd keep on using the walking aids, and there is still a very good chance that your limp and pain will go away. Six weeks is still early.

FYI, after my THR in July 2015, I never stopped limping and having pain. Just like you, if I had one crutch I could walk just fine, needed a little bit of help to stay steady. It turns out that I had torn gluteus medius and minimus tendons, diagnosed with physical exam and MARS MRI. They were torn somehow right after my THR. I had surgery to repair them 10 weeks ago by a surgeon for whom this is one of his specialties, and am hoping for the best with my recovery. Still limping, but getting a bit better every day.

    Good luck to you, John!

    John:

My doc told me "less is more" early on after THR. Your body is telling you use the crutches for support. So listen. You most likely have a set of post op exercises that have been give to you. Do those. The PT will enter the picture in a couple of weeks. There is no rush for recovery.... it will take up to a year to be fully healed.

I am 7 weeks post op from my LTHR. After I do my exercises I really feel much better. I am off of pain meds less lotrine which is taken as needed.

You are doing well, John... no need to rush your recovery and listen to your body.

    Take care

Morning!! It's still very early stage of this surgery. I too had to have a revision after I dislocated my first replacement. After I was able to weight bear after 6 weeks I was limping so bad. I was so discouraged! As for pain I know mine was muscles pain especially in buttock as he had to remove muscle to do revision. Where is your pain? I am now walking without cane with slight limp now. Some days there's no limp. It's all due to weak muscles in the hip area. As you work those muscles, buttocks included you will see improvements! Are you doing physical therapy? Take heart, things will improve. I never thought I would get better after my ordeal but I give thanks to God for where I'm at now! I still have a long way to go but I'm improving. And taking it slow and resting is good. We all heal in different times so just be patient and take care of yourself. Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery!! Have you seen your dr yet?

Hi John, my surgeon told me u I should use my one crutch as long as I felt I needed it and not to compare myself with others and their recovery.

I am 9 weeks post op RHR and do take my one crutch on longer walks only, mainly because I do not want to end up with a limp. My hip has a bit of discomfort still when I fully weight bear walking without support, so think I will still use it until that subsides.

    Good luck with it all!

66 year old male, posterior approach LTHR 13 months ago.

Just give it time, do your exercises and rest up. The first month I thought I would have a forever lump. I started therapy the day after the surgery and then went 3 days a week for the next 6 weeks. One day, you will not have the limp. Focus on walking without the limp. Best of luck
