Lingering pain after antibiotics

hi all,

after my 1st attack 2 weeks ago, I thought all the pain would disappear. instead I still have some tenderness on the right side, as well as in the lower middle part of my abdomen. I took the sickening Cipro and flagyl, and wondered if maybe I wasnt all that consistent with the regime of 2x a day,Cipro, and 3x a day flagyl, but I did finish them. Is this tenderness normal?

As much as I hate to tell you this, yes it is normal. I have always had lingering pain after finishing antibiotics. This disease is very hard to get under control. I have been fighting this for about 3 years now. My surgery is now scheduled for August 2nd.

It could possibly be what you are eating also. Are you on a low residue diet?

    Hi Elizabeth,

For me I have had attacks where the pain lasted 6 months, not what you want to hear but it can happen. My last attack was 22 April and I didn't take the meds correctly. I missed a couple of pills but finished them off like you but unfortunately I had to go back on them for a 10 day course in May because the pain was back and worse but that was just me. I hope others will post their experiences to help you see we are all different with different experiences yet somehow similar.

I did have a colorectal surgeon tell me I would just have to get used to the pain if I did not want surgery. I also only have left side pain and lower abdomen pain. I hope you start feeling better very soon.

Wish I had known that could have had antibiotics for flare ups only couple months ago a consultant said that why hadn't my doctor given me them that I should have had when had bad flare ups. Really been suffering for about 6 years (Thanks doctor not ). Plus I have IBS. Then consultant said I could take Imodium up to 12 a day or more. What think how Crazy. is that. I have a list of food other I should not eat Doesnt' seem to matter if I do stick to it can for no reason just. have normal feces then two hours later be in bad pain and have terrible diarrhoea no warning. no pain no cramping Just cant obviously control. Very upsetting if I'm out Usually I don't eat anything before going out or any hot drinks to scared to have a accident in public Just last week I was just about 5 hundred yards from my front door and just came out. So fed up. Nearly all my pain left side but now have back ache lower left in my bottom I'm just wandering now whether I have a food intolerance and need allergy tests.I dont have celiac desease Reason is ' in past had. at least 3 colonoscope. testsv show I dont have much derverticulitus in my bowel . However been told some people have alot and dont even suffer know they have it (I WISH. ) I Dont understand why anyone gets pain on the right as its 99% only left abdomen for derverticulitus for none mixed race . ! Apperently though people from Asian country's such as India are known to have this desease pain on the right of abdomen. .

Lingering pain is normal, as it takes a long time for the inflammation to subside, even after the infection is cleared. With my 1st attack it took 4+ weeks, and with the latest it was 18 months before the pain totally went. I still get the occasional twinge.

Were you advised this is a disease for life, and you have to change your lifestyle for ever? You should be following a diet rich in soluble fibre, and keep the insoluble fibre to a minimum. Most people keep a food diary to see if certain foods trigger symptoms, then learn to avoid them. For me it is gluten and full fat - for others it can be things like the insoluble fibre in skins, pips, seeds, red meat, dairy, popcorn. Everybody is different and reacts differently to each food, so there is no generic advice.

If you get twinges in future, it is best to stick to liquids only for 48 hours, then a low residue diet, and finally start reintroducing soluble fibre back. If you live in the UK you are expected to manage at home with pills and/or by diet - surgery is not an option unless one of the rare life threatening complications develop, or quality of life is non existent.

In the USA you are much more likely to be hospitalised, medicated much more heavily, and after further attacks offered elective surgery. For some it is essential, but otherwise the pros and cons should be carefully considered, as it is major surgery and the disease can develop further up the colon, so not a cure.

Most people have one attack, are grateful for help and advice, get better and leave the forum. The people who remain tend to be those who have had more serious problems, often have more than one bowel condition, which complicates things, and have needed surgery. Others like myself just want to share experiences and offer reassurance that for the majority things do get better, and it is possible to live a perfectly normal life, with care. It just takes time and patience.

YES PAIN CAN LINGER. MY last flare up symptoms lasted 7 weeks. i did take cipro and flagel as directed. THEY mess up your intestional system. it was suggested a take a priobiotic and it really helped. i stayed on a soft diet mainly until i was sure i was better.

CROCKPOT IS HELPFUL. GROUND BEEF AND CHICKEN MEALS. ALL SOFT FOODS UNTIL YOU ARE FEELING BETTER. GOOD LUCK!
