Linguinal hernia recovery time

My husband is due to have a linguinal hernia repair, ( local anaesthetic and mesh type ). Can anyone tell me what the recovery time is likely to be as we are planning to go on holiday ( short haul ) as soon as possible after. Many thanks. Also should he be running at the present time.

I am one week after a bilateral inguinal hernia by laproscopy. I did want local, but so glad I had a general.
Every one is different, but I wish I knew last Monday how I feel now - amazingly well.
Yes I have tender abdomen - probably from the CO2 they inflate for the surgeon to see the laproscopy - and some bruising and swelling. My main issue is that I am tempted to start doing too much too early.
My advice for myself - it may or not be relevant.
1. Be as healthy as possible before the op. If you can run safely and not forbidden by the Dr - why not?
2. Get your bowels as clear as possible - prunes or what ever and cut right down on anything that may cause constipation. Plenty of healthy food and lots of water so that you will be able to empty your bowels with no effort. Constipation from the anaesthetic and pain killers is common and you will regret it.
3. Getting moving as soon as possible and often as possible without over-doing it.
4. Check with the surgeon or Dr about flying - insurance may be an issue, let them know in case it invalidates. Cabin pressure may be uncomfortable but I would have thought OK.
5. On the day be hyper over hygiene - take no risks, use gel at every opertunity.
It is impossible to predict how hubby will be after the op. If open cut, it will take longer and he will need to take more care.
I really hope he has as good an experience as I had and you both enjoy a welcome holiday.
Mike
PS note that your hubby is likely to be uninsured for driving 2 weeks on safety grounds - dont take the risk - the Dr's orders in this regard has legal status re insurance and the police.

Hi,
Re private. You will probably have more comfortable surroundings, and a shorter waiting time. Then you may find that private may be less equipped for a complicated proceedure? - I dont know. Private or NHS totally depends on the skill and experience of the surgeon. I did look into private but couldn't afford it and they declined as it was not straight forward.
Re times - I was told the average was 13 weeks from seeing the consultant.
Re which mesh is better. I did read up studies on this, there were slight differences in outcomes, but they were very minor. Each surgeon will choose which one is the best for your condition. Have confidence, surgery for hernias has advanced so much recently.
