Lisfranc injury in car accident two weeks ago on right foot.

Two weeks ago a driver ran a red light thru an intersection while I was driving straight thru on a green light. Totaled my vehicle.Top of my foot swelled up immediately. Xrays showed no break, but Ortho wanted an MRI done to determine if it was a Lisfranc injury. Results came back that the top bones on my foot had spread apart, but not a severe spread. My Ortho thinks surgery is best option by putting pins in, which means 6 weeks or longer in a cast, then into a boot. My swelling was real bad the first 10 days, now still swollen, but not near as much. Bruising is gone. I cannot wear a shoe, but wearing a soft foam flip flop I can walk on the side of my foot pretty well. I am wanting to wait until Christmas is over before considering the surgery. I want to see if my foot gets any better and I can put it flat to walk. Hard decision for me because it is 12 steps into my house coming in front or back. I can't imagine crutches. Has anyone not had the surgery that can share their experience with me. I've been told arthritis will set in without the surgery, but have also heard arthritis still sets in the foot from the surgery too. Thanks

Hi Becky! I am sorry about the accident you experienced.
Has your doctor suggested whether or not it is best for you to have the surgery soon than later for the best results? Maybe he will say it doesn't matter.
That is a good sign that your swelling is going down. If it doesn't matter when you have your surgery, the swelling may get less and less. Less swelling or no swelling is an ideal state for performing surgery. If, in the future you aren't experiencing any swelling or pain, the orthopaedic surgeon might decide you don't need surgery after all! I hope everything works out and you are back to a good normal soon!

Thank you. My Ortho said it was moderate, not severe. He wanted to do the surgery, but I want to wait it the first of the year to see how much it improves. I'm walking on the side of my foot in a soft flip flop. Swelling has gone down a great deal. My foot swells up more at night from neo g on it so much during the day. I really want to avoid surgery if possible.
