Long Distance Flying - should I increase pred ?

Posted , 6 users are following.

In 3 days time I am off on a long distance flight from NZ to India. I am on 11mg pred. Should I increase the dose a little a few days before I fly, or just on the day of the flight ? I am very lethargic at the moment. That may be a blessing as I might finally be able to sleep on a long flight.

Hi Flutterbie,, I did a long haul flight back in July, from London to Los Angeles and I was absolutely fine on my dose of 5mg of pred!! I had no problems at all adjusting to the time difference of 8 hours when I got to LA either! Go for it and don't worry before hand, I did and it was all ok!! Enjoy!

Haven't flown with PMR but I did enjoy a twenty-five hour train ride to visit my daughter, and back home again less than a week later, and actually went ahead with starting a scheduled reduction while away although I'd planned not to.  I've heard from other people that they were fine with their dose, if they were fine before they left.  I wouldn't increase pred unless there was a return of any of the PMR symptoms.  And if you are able to relax while away, you should be all right.  Have a good trip!

Thanks Andrea and Anhaga. I'm just suffering some pre holiday nerves. I was never a fan of long flights and was worrying how I would cope in my new situation. You have calmed my nerves. I will just wait and see.

    Hi Flutterbie57,

I've flown from UK to NZ before. No problem, I was on 7mg at time.  Because of time difference and stopover in Singapore I took extra dose on way out, but on way back didn't. When I get on plane, I always put my watch on arrival country's time, so already in their mindset, experienced traveller's advice, so that may adjust your tablet taking time.

Just make sure you have plenty of time so you don't feel rushed, get assistance at airport if you need it - don't be embarrassed - sometimes it's a longer walk than you realise! And you get through booking in and passport control much quicker!

Ensure you have plenty of tablets, just in case, and carry both them and a copy of prescription in your hand luggage.

But, most of all, enjoy your holiday.

Thanks Sue. I haven't quite overcome that barrier yet of asking for assistance. Silly I know. I will certainly be pleased to tip anyone who carries my bag this time tho. I will follow your advice about the time.

      Hi again,

I have arthritic knee which all adds to the fun. I probably could walk, but would take a long time and hurt!- so as the facility is there at no extra cost, except tip- then why not use it.

Forgot to say, don't plan to do anything strenuous first day after landing - either on holiday or back home! Enjoy.
