Long standing GERD ... suffering serious flare-up.

Hi,

I've joined primarily for support and advice. I've had longstanding GERD and have been on Nexium 40mg for over a decade. In the past I've tested negative for H. Pylori. I've had 2 Gastroscopies over this period. The first suggested that I was just producing too much acid. The second that I had a small hernia. My Grandmother had oesophageal cancer. She also had a hernia and years of reflux...that said it was the 70's and she didn't receive appropriate treatment.

I've had flare-ups in the past but never as bad as the one I'm currently experiencing. I'm very worried tbh.

It started about 10wks ago with a dull pain in my upper gastric area that lasted about a week and then disappeared. Thereafter, the reflux just went into hyperdrive. I've tried everything. From changing my diet. Using Gaviscon Advance after meals and bedtime and finally doubling my Nexium to x2 daily for 2 weeks [on my GP's advice]. Nothing has worked. If anything it's gotten worse. I now cannot talk for any length of time because my throat is hoarse and extremely painful. I also have the most dreadful dry mouth. I have a constant sour taste because of the acid coming up into my throat [no food regurgitation though].

Other intermittent symptoms include Burping, choking/coughing fits [NOT when lying down, when awake and sitting up - sometimes when eating], feel breathless at times [kinda like asthma].

My GP is coming out to see me next week [I'm also housebound].

Today I have started using Slippery Elm Powder [in a drink] to see if it will ease my symptoms.

I wondered if anyone had had any success treating their GERD by visiting an Herbalist. I'm considering same but it's very expensive and I don't want to waste money I can little afford if it's unlikely to be effective.

Any advice would be much appreciated 😮)

Did you have a very stressful period lately? It can flare up badly if so. I believe it'll pass. You have to be patient. I think that as we grow up, the symptoms are getting worse when we are in a flare up situation.
