I've been on Citalopram since 2014 and I would say that 20mg is about for sweet spot for this drug. If you are new to this drug then fear not it's quite mild in the long run. I started on 5mg, then 10, 20, 30 and back to 20. I suffer with anxiety and to be honest still suffer on this drug but the symptoms are lessened with regards to anxiety.
What are other anxiety suffers experience of this drug?

hi
I couldn't agree more in terms of 20mg being the sweet spot. It is one of the strongest SSRI medications in its class, and the side effects when you start taking it can be brutal, I had cotton mouth, headaches and found my anxiety to be much worse in the first few days, particularly at night. I also went up to 30mg once and found it spaced me out and made me emotionless. In regards to my anxiety, mine is often triggered when I notice up and down changes in my mood and day to day perceptions of things, like if I notice I feel different about something familiar to me from one day to the next , it can trigger severe anxiety... it's really difficult to explain !! But I find the citalopram keeps me in one mindset and completely grounded , and being on 20mg I can still function everyday.

i think i was "lucky" in that I had severe anxiety when I went on the drug so didn't notice any severe effects. I do also find that I'm a bit of an emotion less zombie on the drug. like someone fell down the stairs at work and while other were freaking out, I was not.
that's just the nature of the beast in my opinion.
that being said, do you ever wonder if you would be ok without it or if it's still actually doing anything??

Yeah i totally agree on the zombie part, that being said I still experience happiness sadness and stress like the average person in day to day life, but in answer to your question, I have been off it in the past, and my mental health especially anxiety was literally up and down in all directions on each day, so I definitely notice the difference when I don't take them, even if the effect seems to lessen over time , trust me they are still doing their job , you've just gotten used to them .

Ive been on 20 regularly since Aug and had gone up and down on it beforehand. Ive been on it for a total of 9 months. I had a lot of side effects but it seems the only one lingering is shakiness but that is not constant and maybe a little less energy. I still have anxiety, as well, but its not as bad as when I started. Im still hoping that will lessen even more.
