Long term effects of Citalopram

I Have been on Citalopam since 2014. started with very low 10 mg dose but as I struggled with WRS and depression it was increased to 20mg and 40mg when I suffered a complete breakdown. I am so much better and Gp wants to reduce my dosage as 40mg for too long can interfere with heart rhythms she told me. I am now on 30 mg. I was wondering if if anyone here has any advice about long term side effects

Hi Sally, there is not that much on side effects due too long term.I was on the medication for 10 yrs and i did not find any long term effects at 40mgs. When was your breakdown? 30 mgs is ok for the time being and maybe after 1 year ,if you are still feeling ok see the doctor about coming down to 20 mgs and i would suggest staying on 20 mgs just to settle any anxious moments you might still get. This is only my suggestion ,so discuss this with your gp .

Thankyou Marsh 23. My breakdown was DECEMBER'18 and I'm due back at work on a phased return in a few weeks. I was just a bit alarmed reading about long term side effects but it is reassuring to know you have not had any problems. I am aware that weaning off is a long process. I tried to come off 10mg and just couldn't but then my circumstances at work were not conducive. I'm looking to be permanently part time and take early retirement in the next 5-6 years. Teaching for 30 years but the job has just become unsustainable.
