Long term, unexplained chest pain

Hi all

After struggling with docs for years over this I thought I would turn to the wider world some input. I am a 27 year old, healthy (enough) male who has been getting intermitment, iregular and infrequent chest pains on and off for around 10 years.

During an 'attack' the pain can be quite severe and sharp - I guess a bit like being stabbed. The pain is localised to the left side of my sternum and feels fairly deep (i.e. it cannot be palpated).

Attacks can last anywhere from a few seconds to a day or so, and tend to come in 'clusters' that can be present for up to a week. There can be months between each cluster of attacks (if you get my drift!).

Pain can sometimes be exacerbated when leaning forward, coughing, lying on my side or raising an arm (seems to always vary - and can sometimes not have any stimulators).

During a 'cluster' period and between attacks I can often feel a mild, underlying ache in my chest. This is easy enough to ignore however.

I have had ECGs and chest xrays that have all been fine, and am not affected at all during exercise - I can happily go out and run 10k with ease.

Doctors have in the past rulled out gastro refulx as there was no tenderness on palpation of my stomach area, although I have sometimes thought that attack can follow a big meal and be accompnied by burping (although this may be my mind tricking me).

Muscolskeletal problems have been mentioned, but why would attacks come in clusters and seemingly out of the blue?

I am at a compltete loss and doctors have been no help. My wife is scared that I will just drop dead from a heart attack - and I am struggling to find new ways of reassuring her.

Any help/thoughts/insight/advice would be seriously welcome!

Thanks

I know everybody has been saying this over and over but I am so glad I found this. Almost word for word the majority of what has been described is what I've been dealing with. I've seen over 10 doctors and they all send me away and they are getting very annoyed. The attacks are also making me develop anxiety, and all the doctors telling me they are anxiety attacks are making me develop anxiety. It's very frustrating. At least now after finding this I know the 'attacks' won't kill me. I've gotten tons of blood tests, tested for ulcer disease, celiac, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, ecgs, chest x rays, etc and nothing. All the doctors can tell me is that it's anxiety or that it's just an unexplained chronic pain that I have to live with.

    Hi,

I am  47year old male, I have had this kind of pain since I was about 12 years old

I remember lying with a hot water bottle on my chest at 13, then the pain kind of went away from sharp to a dull type. Over the years it came and went especially if i trained hard in the gym, sometimes I got home and had to ly down. when I was about 27years old, i got a sharp pain again for about a week. went to the Doc got the ECG etc... he put me on a treadmiil to get my heart rate up and check if it went back to normal after 5 mins. said I was fine and healthy and it was probably just stress from the job. I pretty much ignored it after that but now I have the constant dull pain again. maybe I will look into this Costochondritis thing. oh also if I jog for about 5 minutes then I have to stop too much pain.

I have postedpprevious about myself however, this one is about my husband. He has had chest pain constant for the past 8 months. We have been to the Doctors multiple times, and have yet to arrive at anything that allows for conserable diagnosis. He is a 35 year old who desnt smoke. We have had EKG's, chest xrays, stress test, and blood work done. So far revealing nothing. Today he went for a pulmonary functions test, next week we have an appointment for a sleep test and are awaiting a contrast CT Scan appointment. Hopefully oneof these tests will reveal the true cause. Our doctor is suggesting that it is Costochondritis as well. however given his family history of heart diease I believe he has a possible aortic aneurysm in his thorasic cavity.

Hi all, might as well add my voice to the many of us with mystery illnesses! I am 37 years old and have had chest pains for a couple of weeks now. Moves around a fair bit, started at the top left, then switched to the right, now right and also central (at bottom of rib cage, almost below the rib cage so not sure if it is classed as chest. Had 3 x ecg, chest x-ray and bloods done last Wednesday. Awaiting the bloods but the main ones were tested on the day and came back fine. Since Saturday this has been accompanied by a ringing in my right ear. The pain varies. Can be several short stabs, can be like lightening across the chest and into the back (left side only for that one). I had a funeral for a friend last Friday so I hope that this is stress related but it started wasy before the funeral and has continues now for three days past it.

I am, sadly, beside myself with worry and have no idea what to do. This is horrible. I don't want it to control my life but currently it is, because it refuses to go away. I can only hope that some of you who have posted on here who have been suffering for lomger than me have found a solution to your problems. Guess it is the nature of the interent, but see lots of posts on here about issues, but not many expressing a resolution! Glad this is here though.

I was having the same thing. The chest pains started right after my Mama passed away. But for months before that I had been under a lot of stress helping take care of her. I felt like my anxiety meds quit working cause I began to have panic attacks again. The Dr changed my meds and upped the mg. The chest pains are gone but I still have the pain at the end of my sternum but I believe that's also anxiety I already suffer from acid reflux. Anxiety does a horrible toll on your body.

Thankyou for the reply cindy. Sorry to hear you are suffering. I also get like a ball of pressure (sometimes slight pain) at the top of the sternum so it sounds very similar to what you have been experiencing. I start to worry about every little oddity now! Since Saturday my right ear has been ringing on and off, and yesterday and today the front of me left ankle keeps getting warm. Think normally I would ignore such things, but my mindset right now has me worrying why all these things are gong on! My blood results still arent back yet but I hope when they come back all clear (fingers crossed) that if this is anxiety, it will start to ease. Hiow long have you had this, may I ask?

My Mama passed away on December 17. So I started having panic attacks then just symptoms. And just like you I worried about every little thing. Still do a little but I know it will cause me to get worse so I quickly switch my mind else where. Its a vicious circle. And believe me it can cause pain almost anywhere. Back, shoulders, chest, stomach.... I've had it all. My recommendation to you is if your not on an anti depressant that is good for anxiety, do it! It takes time to get on your system but they do work. 16 years ago I was home bound and wouldn't leave my home because of this crap. I started an antidepressant which I didn't want to do and I had my life back. I just now started having problems again. Ask for a low dose of klonopin I take a .5 and break it in half only when I need it. It will help relax you when you're really uptight. But Xanax and klonopin are addictive so only take it if you need it not every six hours like you will be prescribed. Get out in the sun. Your body losses vitamin d in the winter time you can only get it from the sun. Stay busy, sitting around you notice things and when you do, change the subject dont thrive on it. Get a massage if you can.... Seek a counselor to talk to, believe me it helps.... And last but the most important thing, PRAY, PRAY, PRAY.

Long but I found an answer- I am a young adult male, and have experienced unexplained chest pain for the last 6 months on and off. I have had seen a whole cluster of specialists, including a world renowned cardiologist, lung specialist, osteopath, rhuematologist, spinal doctor, several GP's + numerous diagnoistic tests such as 3x ECG, 3 x Blood Test, Echocardiogram, Chest x-ray, Lung function test, MRI of spine and back. I belive I have the answer hopefully most of you are looking for, as I completely comprehend the pain you are all going through. I will start off my describing my symptons and the progression of these overtime. I woke up one morning October 2015 with a stabbing pain in my chest where my heart is. I was under a hell of a lot of stress at the time and thought it was potentially a heart attack, I was quickly reassured that my heart was fine. The pain sustained on the left side of my chest for 3 months, somedays pain 10/10 and others a 4/10. The pain was a dull achy pain. From Oct- Dec, my pain seemed to move around my upper left torso, somedays the pain would be in my shoulder, my back, my left arm, my right chest, right shoulder. The pain varied in loaction tremendously each day. During this period, I did no physical activity, and hadn't done for since July 2015. All the diagnostic tests came back negative, and no doctor had an answer. I was put on naproxen for 3 weeks in Dec 2015, although I strongly advice against these as they had severe effects on my health and wellbeing. In Jan, I saw a rheumatologist- he suggested that the only way to get rid of the pain, was to work through it, ie exercise big time. I went to see a personal trainer, introduced to stretches and completed this x2 a week for 6 weeks. Also I went swimming x2 a week for 6 weeks. I started using weights in Feb, after building up a lot of lost muscle, and I could feel that this condition had an impact on my joints/muscles- as everytime I went to to the gym I would feel a lot better. Now in March, the pain came back for a couple days over this last weekend, but the answer was again, swim and complete personal training stretching plan. Eat very well. Sleep at least 8 hours a night and make this a routine for your journey back to normality. Now this condition isn't impacting my life anymore, and I am finding I am getting fitter. The exercise + working out completely releives all my pain and this is exactly what I feel will relieve a lot of pain for many of you out there. A musculaskeletal problem can only be resolved in building up the muscle around the affected area I feel, as it worked perfectly for me. Also watch a video of a guy from New Zealand by searching up a youtube video'How to cure Chostochondritis'- and his answer is very applicable. I hope this helps, and I am still going through this routine of exercise and wellbeing, it is working effectively.
