Long term, unexplained chest pain

Hi all

After struggling with docs for years over this I thought I would turn to the wider world some input. I am a 27 year old, healthy (enough) male who has been getting intermitment, iregular and infrequent chest pains on and off for around 10 years.

During an 'attack' the pain can be quite severe and sharp - I guess a bit like being stabbed. The pain is localised to the left side of my sternum and feels fairly deep (i.e. it cannot be palpated).

Attacks can last anywhere from a few seconds to a day or so, and tend to come in 'clusters' that can be present for up to a week. There can be months between each cluster of attacks (if you get my drift!).

Pain can sometimes be exacerbated when leaning forward, coughing, lying on my side or raising an arm (seems to always vary - and can sometimes not have any stimulators).

During a 'cluster' period and between attacks I can often feel a mild, underlying ache in my chest. This is easy enough to ignore however.

I have had ECGs and chest xrays that have all been fine, and am not affected at all during exercise - I can happily go out and run 10k with ease.

Doctors have in the past rulled out gastro refulx as there was no tenderness on palpation of my stomach area, although I have sometimes thought that attack can follow a big meal and be accompnied by burping (although this may be my mind tricking me).

Muscolskeletal problems have been mentioned, but why would attacks come in clusters and seemingly out of the blue?

I am at a compltete loss and doctors have been no help. My wife is scared that I will just drop dead from a heart attack - and I am struggling to find new ways of reassuring her.

Any help/thoughts/insight/advice would be seriously welcome!

Thanks

    Ji86-

I am having the same symtoms as yourself.  I've had an angiogram, stress-test (cardiac) and plumonary x-rays and cat-scans.  I am a 60 year old and in pretty good shape.  Have you have any luck with a diagnosis?

Hi everyone. I'm a healthy 18 year old female who was just diagnosed with Cosot today. It's pretty scary to me right now because it came out of nowhere. I have been having traveling sharp pains between my shoulder blades for a really long time, like one other I saw on here, but I didn't think much of it. Today, I got a sharp, pressurized feeling underneath my left breast. I thought I was going to pass out in the middle of work. It hurt so badly, like nothing I've ever felt before. I couldn't talk without running out of breath and I couldn't inhale without it hurting worse. They gave me some anti-inflammatories that should last about a week, but I'm not sure what to expect after they're gone or how to help the pain if it doesn't go away. Any advice?

Hi Friend Ji86.  I have had several instances of costochondritis over the years.  If you've been diagnosed, that's the hard part; so you're well on your way to getting relief.

After my cardiologist ruled out coronary issues, he prescribed two different anti-inflamatories before putting me on Robaxin (methocarbamol) 750 mg; 2 tablets 4 times daily.  This stopped my symptoms within 4 days and I took the medicine for a total of 10 days.

Robaxin is an older med and many physicians do not know the theraputic dosage rate of 3500-5500 mg daily.  So be sure s/he understands the correct dosage before prescribing.

Good luck and I hope you get better soon!

Possibly Precordial catch syndrome (Google it). I've been to many doctors for these exact same conditions. I've had many tests done also, including blood tests, CT scans, and a few echocardiograms, and all that was concluded was that I had Costochondritis. I don't beleive it's Costo because I have been experiencing these pains for about 8 years now, and I'm only 19. After researching for the past year, this was the best result that I have found that could possibly be the answer. Hope this helps.

      Hi J11863:

I agree. Precordial Catch Syndrome (Texidor's Twinge) is really the only thing that I've found that seems very close to the symptoms that we have. The problem I've found, is that nobody really knows what it is, or how to treat it.

Thanks man. I'm pretty much in the same case as you. I was at least 12 when it started and now i'm 22. I do exercice at the gym and i don't smoke or drink. I'm not overweight neither. The pain just comes and goes after days or weeks like it says. Sometimes stronger than others. I decided to google it now since i've been ignoring it for so long and found your comment. It really looks like PCS is what i have. It's good that is not serious but it's bad that it has no cure. I guess it just disapears with time or in some cases stays with you for the rest of your life. We'll just have to learn to live with it like i already have.

I'm unsure the link I sent is viable, please google splenic flexure syndrome.  It could be the cause of your problem.  If so, in all probablity, it can be remedied by diet.

I'm a 16 year old female and my situation is somewhat similar. I have terrible pains on the left side of my chest. It hurts when I basically do anything. I could be just standing doing nothing and it could hurt. This issue has been happening for a few years and just last year it started to get worse. When my chest first started to hurt it was only little pains that wouldn't last all that long and that went on for about 2 years. The 3rd year the pains got worse. I finally told my mother what was happening( and yes I told her very late but I didn't think it was a big deal at the time) I started struggling with breathing, I had to quit sports. Doctors tried many different medications including steroids and non of them worked . I was sent to thedacare where I was examined. I got ultrasounds of my heart and that's when they found out that my sternum had been severely inflamed. I was then sent to children's hospital in Neenah,wi. I met this awesome doctor! She got right down to business and was very determined on figuring out what was causing this and so on. She never really did find out sadly. But she did find medicine that worked for the pain. Now it's a year later and the medication isn't working anymore.. My chest seems to be getting worse. I'm always trying to catch my breath, I can't exercise or stand for too long. The pain is always there. I miss a lot of school because of this and I just really need answers 🙁 It's sad to say but I really feel my life is going to be short. A lot of heart problems run in my family . At the hospital I'm called a "mystery patient " because nobody can figure out what's wrong with me.

I'm glad I found this thread.  While I don't like to see others in pain or not feeling well, it is comforting to know that I am not alone.  I am a 38 year old male, who has had a sharp, stabbing pain in the left side of my chest randomly for about 15 years or so. Always in the same two spots.  I can go months without getting them, then when I do they can last a day or a week.  There's nothing I can do for them, except worry.  The Drs aren't sure what they are, they've tried tests, meds for acid, etc.  I have had EKGs and blood work and they assure me it's not cardiac related, but how can I not think it is when it's happening? It's scary.  I don't want to develop some sort of anxiety issue because of them, but I feel like that's where it's headed.  Has anybody found a successful treatment?

Now let me share my experience with you and others as well. I suddenly felt a deep pain while breathing in and out in right side of chest in April 2015 in morning. And immediately went to hospital, doctor advised as chest inflation and prescribed certain medicine. 3-4 days later I was fit and fine.

Now after one month again same pain occurred and doctors advised same. This cycle continued till August 2015 pain comes and goes but now with alternate side of the chest and also blood in sputum; then I was recommended to have a consultation with Pulmonilogist as I am a heavy smoker.

That doctor recommended to have a broncoscopy, x-ray and then later CT scan. While everything was normal there was a scar on lungs at right side. Agin certain medicines were given and I was told nothing to worry. Meanwhile I went for all cardiac related tests where everything was fine. I went to oncologist, who also said everything is normal after looking all reports.

Pain cycle continued till Dec 2015. Now on 8th Jan 2016, when I wake up in morning; I was not able to walk and I was supposed to leave for Singapore. I took pain killers and left; but was not able to walk even 100 meters, now there was a new pain in my legs as well.

After returning back I again went to hospital, where doctors recommended to have an ultrasound along with Color Doppler for legs.

Now guys finally I got diagnosed with DVT and Pulmonary Embolism. I got admitted to hospital and now on anticoagulants/blood thinners.

But now I am suffering with same unexplained tightness in my chest and feel like heart is going to stop anytime. And for this also I had every test, cardiac, pulmonary angiogram etc. All normal.

I am again a healthy adult from India, 33 Years of age, heavy traveller and a smoker.

Only solution which works on me to this problem is Exercise and reduced smoking.

I also urge to you guys, please take an advise from doctors on Pulmonary Embolism and DVT.
